Japan Building "Great Wall" Against Tsunamis

01:08
Four years after the tsunami ravaged much of its northeastern coast and killed over eighteen-thousand people, Japan is constructing a nearly 250-mile chain of cement seawalls to fend off future towering waves. Opponents of the 6.8 billion dollar wall, which in some places will reach nearly five stories high, say that the massive concrete barrier will damage marine ecology and scenery and hinder vital fisheries. Moreover, it will do only little to protect residents, and even worse - it'll foster complacency. Instead, they call for people to either move to higher ground, or to create a "green wall" of trees that perhaps won't stop the floods, but will weaken the impact of the waves. However those in favor of the "great wall", say it's a necessary evil, and one that will provide some jobs, at least for a time. http://bigstory.ap.org/article/35d608bb1ebe4766b33146e39b6044ba/japan-opts-massive-costly-sea-wall-fend-tsunamis http://www.wochit.com

Researchers Hopeful New Treatment Leads To HIV Cure

01:13
A new treatment resulting from the partnership between Britain's National Institute for Health Research and other leading medical research organizations has scientists hopeful that they may have found a way to eradicate the HIV virus completely. The Collaborative entity known as HIV Eradication of Viral Reservoirs is comprised of clinicians, virologists, and immunologists, who have treated the first patient in an upcoming study that will involve 50 participants. Whereas previous HIV treatments use Antiretroviral Therapy - or ART - to stop the virus from copying itself and spreading - which often results with the virus' return when treatment ends, this new approach hopes to activate "sleeping" HIV cells and encourage a patient's own immune system to fight HIV. According to professor Sarah Fidler "This first participant has now completed the intervention and we have found it to be safe and well tolerated." But Fidler adds that "Only when all 50 study participants have completed the whole study, by 2018, will we be able to tell if there has been an effect on curing HIV." http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2016/10/03/Scientists-hope-for-HIV-cure-with-new-treatment/9551475522018/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Israel Says Security Ties With India Out of the Closet

00:51
The Israeli defense minister said on Thursday that Israel's security relationship with India is out in the open after years of being under wraps. He vows to play a bigger role in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's drive to build an industrial base. Modi's nationalist party has long seen Israel has a natural ally against Islamist militancy, and has openly cultivated warmer ties, beginning with a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York last year. Since then, various government ministers and top officials have been exchanging visits and on Wednesday, Moshe Ya'alon arrived in India. It was the first visit by an Israeli defense minister since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1992. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/worldNews/~3/yqa-0tW2ZmI/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com

Instant Karma For Manhattan Attorney's Viral Racist Rant

01:05
Attorney Aaron Schlossberg is getting a heavy dose of payback for recent actions. Schlossberg was videotaped this week at a Fresh Kitchen near his Madison Avenue law office Where he was berating restaurant employees.and diners for speaking Spanish Schlossberg even threatened to call immigration authorities. The next day, his face landed on the front page of the New York Daily News. It was positioned above a Spanish headline which translated to: "Screw you, idiot." And there's more video emerging, showing Schlossberg accosting another pedestrian. And to top it all off, 2 NYC lawmakers have filed a formal complaint against him. "What we witnessed in the vile video from Mr. Schlossberg, which has since gone viral, is a humiliating and insulting attack on the more than 50 years of progress that this nation has made since the civil rights movement. We watched Aaron's video and we were disgusted." Rubén Díaz Jr. and Rep. Adriano Espaillat. The 42 year old Schlossberg is now laying low, (hopefully) learning a lesson about verbally attacking innocent bystanders. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/new-york-politicians-file-formal-complaint-against-lawyer-whose-racist-n875006?cid=public-rss_20180517 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Scientists Make Great Leap Forward in Treatment of Toxoplasmosis

01:15
Researchers say a new experimental model for the bacteria Toxoplasma gondii, which causes toxoplasmosis, may lead to treatment for the infection and could help with research on other diseases. In a study published in the journal Scientific Reports, researchers from the United States, England and France outlined methods for better research into the bacteria. Using an experimental model, researchers identified targets critical to T. gondii's life cycle, allowing them to develop compounds that limit the bug's ability to survive and may be able to cross the blood-brain barrier to allow treatment of central nervous system infections. More than 2 billion people around the world are estimated to be infected. Toxoplasmosis is an incurable brain infection. It is generally not life-threatening. However, it can damage the sight of millions who have it, threatens the health of infants and children, and can cause significant health issues for people with AIDS or cancer whose immune systems are compromised. http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2016/07/19/Scientists-detail-best-method-to-treat-toxoplasmosis/5991468870778/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Goldman Sachs Limits Interns to 17 Hour Workdays

01:14
Memo to Wall Street interns: go home and get some sleep. Goldman Sachs told its summer interns — all 2,900 of them — when they started their gigs this summer that they can’t be in the office between midnight and 7 a.m.. The 17-hour work day restriction is an attempt by the banking giants to curb some of their junior staffers’ long and grueling hours. One young banker told Atlantic writer Kevin Roose last year that the “banker 9 to 5” is 9 a.m. until 5 a.m. the next day. And 22-year-old Sarvshreshth Gupta complained to his father about regular 100 hour work weeks before he died earlier this year. Earlier this year, Bank of America told its staffers that they’ll be required to take a minimum of four weekends off per month. Goldman Sachs has also encouraged its staffers not to work on weekends, and began offering analysts full-time contracts instead of two-year contracts to relieve some of the pressure. http://feeds.mashable.com/~r/Mashable/~3/tGnTl615qMg/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

Barack Obama Joins Malia and Sasha in New York for Some Father-daughter Time

00:45
It’s inevitable: At some point, teenage kids just aren’t that into their parents any more. President Barack Obama, parent to two teenage daughters, set out to combat that trend by hanging out with his girls in New York for the weekend. The trio, plus some of the girls’ friends, seemed intent on packing a lot into their 24 hours together in the city. But no one was out of the hotel door too early on a rainy Saturday morning after zigzagging around Manhattan in dad’s motorcade into the wee hours on Friday night. A Saturday afternoon Broadway matinee was in the offing, believed to be Hamilton, the hit hip-hop musical about the Founding Fathers. http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/jul/18/barack-obama-malia-sasha-new-york-father-daughter-time http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

Yoshinori Ohsumi Wins Nobel Prize In Medicine For His Work On Autophagy

01:07
Yoshinori Ohsumi is a biologist at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, and this year’s winner for the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. Ohsumi has received the prize for his work on autophagy, a method for breaking down and recycling large pieces of cellular junk, such as clusters of damaged proteins or worn-out organelles. To keep recycling machinery in good condition is crucial for the cells' health. Not enough recycling can cause cellular trash to build up and lead to neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and too much recycling has been linked to cancer. According to biologist Maria Masucci of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, Ohsumi‘s discoveries helped reveal the mechanism and significance of a fundamental physiological process. She said, “There is growing hope that this knowledge will lead to the development of new strategies for the treatment of many human diseases.” https://www.sciencenews.org/article/deciphering-cell%E2%80%99s-recycling-machinery-earns-nobel http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

'Phantom Limb' Pain Can Be Relieved Through Brain Training

01:09
People who undergo an amputation often experience pain and sensation from the limb that's no longer there. It's a phenomenon doctors call "phantom limb pain." But now, researchers say they've figured out a way to rewire the brain and reduce pain coming from a phantom limb. According to a new study, the technique essentially involves distracting the brain from mixed signals it may receive as a result of losing the limb. According to UPI, the research team used a brain-machine interface to decode the neural activity of the mental action needed for a patient to move their "phantom" hand, then linked those signals to a robot prosthetic limb. Patients experienced an increase in phantom pain if they tried to control the prosthetic arm by willing the movement of their missing arm. But patients' phantom pain decreased if they were trained to move the robot arm using the "wrong" side of the brain. For example, researchers said patients missing the left arm experienced reduced pain if they moved the prosthetic arm through neural signals associated with their right arm. Study co-author Ben Seymour says he hopes this research will provide an alternative to painkillers for people experiencing phantom limb pain. http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2016/10/27/Brain-training-may-curb-phantom-limb-pain/4131477600155/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Philadelphia Apologizes to Baseball Great Jackie Robinson

00:52
The city of Philadelphia officially offered an apology this week to Jackie Robinson for the shameful way he was treated in the City of Brotherly Love during his famous baseball career. The City Council passed a resolution on Thursday naming April 15 as a day to honor Robinson’s achievements and to apologize for the racism he faced while visiting Philadelphia in the 1940s. As baseball fans and historians know, April 15 is the day Robinson broke baseball's color barrier by becoming the first black player in the sport. In Philadelphia, Robinson was famously taunted by manager Ben Chapman, who, along with Phillies players, hurled racial slurs at Robinson each time he came to bat during the 1947 season. http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/mar/31/philadelphia-apology-jackie-robinson-racism-dodgers http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

New Bio-Plastic Invented In Indonesia, Completely Biodegradable & Non-Toxic

00:58
The island of Bali is a jewel of the Indonesian archipelago, a tourist magnet known for idyllic beaches and lush forests. But the curse of plastic pollution threatens to make this a paradise lost, disfigured by trash-strewn shores and sprawling landfill sites. Only China dumps more plastic in the ocean than Indonesia, and much of it washes up in Bali. The crisis inspired local surfer and entrepreneur Kevin Kumala to find a novel solution. "I was with a friend sitting outside a bar and we were seeing hundreds of motorcyclists wearing vinyl ponchos," he recalls. "It clicked that these disgusting, toxic ponchos would be used a few times and then discarded, but they would not decompose." The biology graduate resolved to create a better plastic, that would leave no trace. http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/16/world/cassava-plastic/index.html http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Beau Biden's viewing service was emotional to say the least. Vice President Joe Biden, whose son tragically passed away from brain cancer five days ago at the young age of 46, was surrounded by friends and family Thursday at Beau's public service and viewing at Legislative Hall in Dover, Delaware. Biden, his wife Jill Biden, Beau's wife and kids and the rest of their family were understandably emotional while watching honor guards carry Beau's casket, which was draped with an American flag. The famous family shed tears as they said goodbye to the former Attorney General, who had been battling brain cancer for several years. In addition to the service and viewing, Beau was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross, Delaware's highest honor, for his "heroism, meritorious service and outstanding achievement." http://www.eonline.com/news/663433/vice-president-joe-biden-attends-son-beau-biden-s-emotional-funeral-surrounded-by-family?cmpid=rss-000000-rssfeed-365-topstories&utm_source=eonline&utm_medium=rssfeeds&utm_campaign=rss_topstories http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

Homeless NYC Girl Earns Junior Olympics Win

NEW YORK (AP) — The biggest surprise Monday for 10-year-old Rainn Sheppard, competing at the Junior Olympics in Houston and far from the New York City homeless shelter she shares with her two sisters and mother, wasn't the gold medal she won in the 3,000 meters. It was the arrival of her mother. Rainn and her sisters, 11-year-old Tai and 8-year-old Brooke, had hoped merely to make their mother proud, since she couldn't afford to make the trip from the Brooklyn shelter herself. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/386c25518f464186bf7a2ac026580ce7/Article_2016-08-02-US--Homeless%20Track%20Stars/id-5bae5d9b43b04a0ea7d6e88c5606758a http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, despite efforts to fight the opioid epidemic, deaths from drug overdoses reached an all-time high in 2014. Deaths from overdoses of prescription drugs and heroin continue to be the leading cause of unintentional death for Americans. The numbers rose 14% from 2013 to 2014. The latest CDC data finds that deaths from natural opiates such as morphine, codeine and semisynthetic prescription pain killers like oxycodone and hydrocodone jumped 10% from 2013 to 2014. Elon Musk is basically trying to save the world. Just a few days after announcing Tesla’s all-electric SUV called the Model X, his latest step is creating world’s most efficient rooftop solar panel. On Friday, SolarCity, the company he chairs, announced it will start producing panels with a module efficiency exceeding 22%. But thanks to the efficiencies, the panels will produce 30-40% more power than a standard issue solar panels despite being of comparable size. They will be available for most customers starting in 2017. The company also said the panels will be manufactured at its new Buffalo, New York facility, a unique feature given that almost all other solar panels are made in China. http://fusion.net/story/208036/elon-musk-solarcity-solar-panel-record/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=/feed/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

Woman With ALS Holds Goodbye Party Before Ending Own Life

01:10
In early July, Betsy Davis emailed her closest friends and relatives to invite them to a two-day party, telling them: "These circumstances are unlike any party you have attended before, requiring emotional stamina, centeredness and openness." And just one rule: No crying in front of her. The 41-year-old artist had ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. According to the Associated Press, Davis held the gathering to say goodbye before becoming one of the first Californians to take a lethal dose of drugs under the state's new doctor-assisted suicide law for the terminally ill. Davis spent months planning her exit, feeling empowered after spending the last three years losing control of her body bit by bit. The painter and performance artist could no longer stand, brush her teeth or scratch an itch. Her caretakers had to translate her slurred speech for others. Wearing a Japanese kimono she bought on a bucket-list trip she took after being diagnosed in 2013, she looked out at her last sunset and took the drugs at 6:45 p.m. with her caretaker, her doctor, her massage therapist and her sister by her side. Four hours later, she died. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/386c25518f464186bf7a2ac026580ce7/Article_2016-08-11-US--Woman's%20Final%20Party/id-21d9da4fc7f440b2ab9c01f3eb8c68a4 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

California Water District OKs Tom Selleck's Settlement Offer

A Southern California water district voted Wednesday night to accept Tom Selleck's offer of more than $21,000 to settle a lawsuit accusing the "Magnum, P.I." star of taking water he wasn't entitled to for his 60-acre ranch. The vote, taken during a closed session, was 3-0 with two members of the Calleguas Municipal Water District's board of directors absent. The district, which provides water to Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and several other Ventura County cities, sued Selleck and his wife earlier this month after officials said a private investigator discovered a tanker truck bound for their ranch was regularly filling up at a Calleguas fire hydrant. The board's acting president, Thomas Slosson, said state and local law prohibits taking water outside a district's boundaries. The ranch, in nearby Westlake Village, is just outside the Calleguas area. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/4e67281c3f754d0696fbfdee0f3f1469/Article_2015-07-15-US-Tom-Selleck-Water-Theft-Lawsuit/id-8144aa9b29d34c74b5b04911adc20f13 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

The Less Obvious, Early Symptoms Of Parkinson's Disease

01:08
When you think of Parkinson’s disease, you probably picture tremors and Michael J. Fox, but a more telling early indicator is handwriting that suddenly gets much smaller. According to Reader's Digest, a 2013 Israeli study found handwriting analysis was able to identify patients in the early stages of Parkinson’s more than 97 per cent of the time. Other early indications of the condition can include a loss of smell. If you stop noticing pungent cologne and aren’t drawn to the aroma of mouth-watering food, pay attention. Intense dreams that cause you to thrash and kick in your bed can also be an indicator. When any of these symptoms last more than a couple of weeks, see a neurologist. The earlier the disease is diagnosed, and the sooner you get control of the symptoms, the better your quality of life will be. http://www.readersdigest.ca/health/conditions/10-red-flag-symptoms/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

France: First country to ban plastic cups, plates

01:02
France has become the first country in the world to ban disposable plastic cups and plates. A new French law will require all disposable tableware to be made from 50% biologically-sourced materials that can be composted at home by January of 2020. That number will rise to 60% by January of 2025. The measure is an addition to France's "Energy Transition for Green Growth Act," a wide-reaching law adopted last year with the aim of mitigating the impact of climate change. France hopes to become a world leader in environmental and energy solutions, catalyzed by the COP21 Climate Change conference held in Paris last December. Scientists estimate that around eight million tons of plastic waste ended up in the world's oceans in 2010, with warnings that this amount could increase tenfold unless international waste management is improved. Bangladesh became the first nation to ban the bags in 2002, after they blocked up drainage systems during flooding. Countries including South Africa, Kenya, China, Rwanda and Mexico have followed suit, along with certain states of the US. http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/19/europe/france-bans-plastic-cups-plates/index.html http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai became the youngest ever Nobel laureate Wednesday when she received the Peace Prize in Oslo, sharing it with Indian child rights campaigner Kailash Satyarthi. "A young girl and a somewhat older man, one from Pakistan and one from India, one Muslim, the other Hindu; both symbols of what the world needs: more unity. Fraternity between the nations!" said Thorbjoern Jagland, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel committee. Malala, 17, who was given the prestigious award in Oslo City Hall, became a global icon after she was shot and nearly killed by the Taliban in October 2012 for insisting that girls had a right to an education. Satyarthi, 60, was recognised by the Nobel committee for a 35-year battle to free thousands of children from virtual slave labour. http://news.yahoo.com/malala-yousafzai-17-receive-nobel-peace-prize-044511088.html http://www.wochit.com

India Builds First 'smart' City as Urban Population Swells

01:07
India's push to accommodate a booming urban population and attract investment rests in large part with dozens of "smart" cities like the one being built on the dusty banks of the Sabarmati river in western state Gujarat. So far, it boasts modern underground infrastructure, two office blocks and not much else. The plan, however, is for a meticulously planned metropolis complete with gleaming towers, drinking water on tap, automated waste collection and a dedicated power supply - luxuries to many Indians. With an urban population set to double at 814 million people by 2050, India faces the kind of mass urbanization only seen before in China. Ahead of his election last May, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised 100 so-called smart cities by 2022 to help meet the rush. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/worldNews/~3/K4E_tbpmqk8/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com

Honduran Families Deported Back To A Bleak Future

01:08
Overwhelmed by unaccompanied minors and women with children crossing illegally, U.S. authorities have stepped up deportations back to Central America. 58 women and children returned last week on a U.S. flight to San Pedro Sula, considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Illegal immigration of Central American families and unaccompanied children spiked this year as rumors circulated that children, and women with children, would be released in the United States. Since Oct. 1, more than 57,000 children and 55,000 people traveling as families, mostly from El Salvador, Honduras, have been arrested. The spike prompted the Obama administration to expand detention space for families and to deport them more quickly — sending with them a stern message that there are no free passes for migrants coming illegally. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/3d281c11a96b4ad082fe88aa0db04305/Article_2014-07-23-LT--Honduras-Deported%20Families/id-d8c0967c327046ee8f5e729d69b32ec5 http://www.wochit.com

Scientists Create Better Way To Study Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria

00:55
For bacteria, practice makes perfect: Adjusting to ever higher levels of antibiotics prepares them to morph into super resistant strains, and scientists can now watch it happen. According to Science News, a new device — a huge petri dish coated with different concentrations of antibiotics — makes this normally hidden process visible. Microbiologist Michael Baym and colleagues report in the Sept. 9th issue of 'Science' that the setup gives a step-by-step picture of how garden-variety microbes become antibiotic-resistant superbugs. Baym and his colleagues think the experimental setup could be used to study microbial evolution under other environmental and spatial constraints, like the availability of particular nutrients. https://www.sciencenews.org/article/scientists-watch-bacteria-evolve-antibiotic-resistance http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

According to researchers, the long lost British Ship, the HMS Terror, has been found in pristine condition at the bottom of an Arctic bay. The Terror and the flagship of British polar explorer Sir John Franklin, the HMS Erebus, were abandoned in heavy sea ice back in 1848, during the British Royal Navy explorer’s doomed attempt to complete the Northwest Passage. All 129 men on the Franklin expedition died, in the worst disaster to hit Britain’s Royal Navy in its long history of exploring the arctic. The well-preserved wreck matches the Terror in several key aspects, but was found nearly 60 miles south of where experts long believed the ship was crushed by ice. http://www.cnn.com/videos/world/2016/09/13/ship-lost-for-168-years-found.arctic-research-foundation http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

"Many people are still unfamiliar with -- and have never stepped inside -- some of the sports venues, we hope to bring sport closer to their daily life," a spokesperson for the city's Department of Information and Tourism said. "By choosing to revamp a train -- an everyday means of commuting, the public will have the opportunity to participate." The swimming pool car, with a floor that resembles a real water surface, has proved to be the most popular and Instagrammable theme so far. The 29th Summer Universiade kicks off on August 19 and closes on August 30. It's the first time Universiade is held in Taiwan and the game is the biggest sporting event Taiwan has hosted so far. http://www.cnn.com/travel/article/taipei-metro-universiade-3d-swimming-pool/index.html http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Baltimore's National Aquarium Will Create Dolphin Sanctuary With Natural Habitat

01:00
Baltimore's National Aquarium will create the first U.S. dolphin sanctuary and transfer its eight dolphins there, the aquarium said on Tuesday. The move comes after five years of study and as the U.S. public has grown increasingly uneasy about keeping dolphins and whales in captivity, Chief Executive John Racanelli said in a statement. Creating the outdoor, seawater sanctuary poses a challenge since all but one of the colony of six female and two male dolphins was born in an aquarium or a zoo, Racanelli said. One female, Nani, was born in the wild in 1972. The dolphins will also have to learn how to be ocean-dwelling creatures. The site will be much larger than the dolphins' current habitat, and it will have more natural stimuli, such as fish and marine plants. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/domesticNews/~3/89w-NYpHWRM/us-usa-environment-dolphins-idUSKCN0Z0214 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Study: New Way to Activate Stem Cells to Grow Hair

00:41
Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles say in a study they have identified a new way to activate stem cells in hair follicles to regrow hair. The study, published today in Nature Cell Biology, findings could lead to new drugs that could promote hair growth for people with baldness or alopecia. The cells then either sent pyruvate to their mitochondria or convert it to lactate. Researchers blocked the production of lactate genetically in mice and found that this prevented hair follicle stem cell activation and then increased lactate production genetically in the mice, which accelerated hair follicle stem cell activation. https://www.upi.com/Health_News/2017/08/14/Scientists-find-new-way-to-activate-stem-cells-to-grow-hair/1301502733503/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Gremlins 3 Update Offered by Gremlins Star Zach Galligan

00:59
When it comes to both Christmas-set movies and horror/comedy mash-ups, Joe Dante’s 1984 classic Gremlins is one that tends to assume a high spot on both lists. Starring Zach Galligan (Waxwork) as lead Billy Peltzer – and featuring ’80s mainstays like Phoebe Cates, Judge Reinhold, and Corey Feldman in supporting roles – Gremlins introduced the world to both the adorable little mogwai creatures and the evil titular monsters that they turn into when fed after midnight. A massive hit, Gremlins went on to gross over $150 million theatrically on a budget of only $11 million. http://screenrant.com/gremlins-3-cast-plot-details-zach-galligan/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

India to Sign Iran Port Deal, Ignores U.S. Warning

01:01
India will push ahead this week with plans to build a port in southeast Iran, two sources said, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi keen to develop trade ties with Central Asia and prepared to fend off U.S. pressure not to rush into any deals with Iran. India and Iran agreed in 2003 to develop a port at Chabahar on the Gulf of Oman, near Iran's border with Pakistan, but the venture has made little progress because of Western sanctions on Iran. Now, spurred on by Chinese President Xi Jinping's signing of energy and infrastructure agreements with Pakistan worth $46 billion, Modi wants to swiftly sign trade deals with Iran and other Gulf countries. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/worldNews/~3/OyDjpFbC4kQ/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com

America's First Wave-Produced Power Could Meet A Quarter of Energy Power Needed

00:56
The Navy's Wave Energy Test Site at the Marine Corps base at Kaneohe Bay on Oahu in Hawaii, a wave energy test site holds undersea cables that move up and down with the waves, turning the wheels of generators in the donut-shaped Lifesaver device, becoming the first wave-produced electricity to go live in the United States. It is estimated that the ocean's endless motion has enough power to meet a quarter of America's energy needs and reduce the nation's reliance on oil, gas, and coal. Though small in scale, the test project near Kaneohe Bay represents the vanguard of U.S. wave energy development, consisting only two buoys anchored a half-mile to a mile offshore. The buoys are barely noticeable from shore, but developers envision dozens of machines working at once, an idea that could run into the same opposition wind turbines have faced from environmentalists, tourist groups and others. Steve Kopf, CEO of Northwest Energy Innovations, said "Nobody wants to look out and see wind turbines or wave machines off the coast." http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/386c25518f464186bf7a2ac026580ce7/Article_2016-09-19-US--Wave%20Energy%20Race/id-beac5780afcf489587559685a394102c http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

How Teens Are Affected By Technology

00:51
‘Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age,’ is a documentary that discusses and directs both modern-day internet and phone addiction. According to new studies, a modern-American teenager spend six and a half hours looking at digital devices every day. 60 percent of teenagers in a newly conducted study said that they text and use social media while doing homework, and 76 percent of them listen to music. Sherry Turkle, a noted sociologist say this is hurting more than helping. She states, “What’s extraordinary about the studies on multitasking is, even though you’re doing worse and worse on everything you’re doing, you feel as though you’re doing better and better.” Teenagers will soon need to lower their tech usage. https://www.cnet.com/news/teen-tech-smartphone-addiction-screenagers-snapchat-google/#ftag=CAD590a51e http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

'Ghost Particle' Found In Antarctica

01:03
According to a report by CNN, for the first time, scientists have been able to trace the origins of a ghostly subatomic particle that traveled 3.7 billion light-years to Earth. CNN reports that the tiny, high-energy cosmic particle, known as a neutrino, was discovered by sensors deep in the Antarctic ice in the IceCube detector. Scientists were able to trace the origin of the neutrino to a galaxy with a supermassive, rapidly spinning black hole at its center. The galaxy is located to the left of the Orion constellation's shoulder and is approximately 4 billion-light-years from Earth. Doug Cowen, a founding member of the IceCube collaboration, said in a statement, "This identification launches the new field of high-energy neutrino astronomy, which we expect will yield exciting breakthroughs in our understanding of the universe and fundamental physics, including how and where these ultra-high-energy particles are produced." https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/12/world/neutrino-blazar-cosmic-ray-discovery/index.html http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

I Will Force the Expiration of The PATRIOT Act...

00:49
Rand Paul plans to force the expiration of the PATRIOT Act Sunday by refusing to allow Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to expedite debate on a key surveillance bill. In a statement to POLITICO Saturday, Paul warned that he would not consent to any efforts to pass either an extension of current law or the USA Freedom Act, a reform bill passed overwhelmingly by the House earlier this month. “So tomorrow, I will force the expiration of the NSA illegal spy program,” Paul said. Because of the nature of the Senate rules, Paul can force the expiration of the PATRIOT Act, which he has vowed on the campaign trail to repeal as president because he contends it invades Americans’ privacy rights. http://www.politico.com/story/2015/05/exclusive-rand-paul-i-will-force-the-expiration-of-the-patriot-act-118443.html http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

President Obama Turns Books Journalist in Marilynne Robinson Interview

01:13
The American president interviewed the Pulitzer-winning novelist Marilynne Robinson in a lengthy piece which has just been published by the literary magazine, taking the author of Gilead through topics from Christianity to democracy. He told Robinson, who he has known since 2012 when he presented her with the National Humanities Medal, that “one of the things that I don’t get a chance to do as often as I’d like is just to have a conversation with somebody who I enjoy and I’m interested in … and so we had this idea that why don’t I just have a conversation with somebody I really like and see how it turns out. And you were first in the queue.” Informing Robinson that her creation John Ames, a pastor from Iowa, is “one of my favourite characters in fiction”, Obama asked her “how your interest in Christianity converges with your concerns about democracy”. He also inquired how, given the importance of faith to Robinson, “at least in our democracy and our civic discourse, it seems as if folks who take religion the most seriously sometimes are also those who are suspicious of those not like them”? http://www.theguardian.com/books/2015/oct/13/president-obama-turns-books-journalist-in-marilynne-robinson-interview http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

Historic Ocean Liner Desperately in Need of Repairs

00:44
According to a new report, the iconic Queen Mary ocean liner needs repairs and could soon sink if nothing is done to restore the 83-year-old ship. Naval architects and engineers who recently inspected the vessel as part of a marine survey, tell CBS News that corrosion in the engine room has left the ship prone to flooding. Since there are no water-tight doors or working pumps to remove the water, the ship, which is stationed in Long Beach, California, is now facing the increasing threat of sinking. According to Long Beach’s Economic and Property Development Director John Keisler, the city has designated $23 million for urgent repairs. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/historic-queen-mary-ocean-liner-in-danger-of-sinking-without-repairs/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Can Scientists Save Puerto Rico's "Monkey Island"?

00:47
More than two weeks after Hurricane Maria made landfall on Puerto Rico, scientists are still scrambling to save the more than 1,000 rhesus monkeys living of the island's southeast coast. Since tge 1930s, Cayo Santiago, known as “Monkey Island,” has been a crucial resource for researchers studying primates. Miraculously, the monkeys largely survived the initial impact of Hurricane Maria. But the storm devastated the small island, destroying its lush vegetation and wrecking the infrastructure that provided its inhabitants with fresh water. Researchers are now transporting shipments of food and water to the island and distributing supplies in the local community in nearby Punta Santiago. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/monkey-island-puerto-rico-hurricane-maria_us_59d7abd0e4b0f6eed3500645?section=us_science http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Elon Musk Building A Tiny 'Submarine' For Thai Soccer Team Rescue

00:50
Gizmodo reports that Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said on Saturday that he is building “a tiny, kid-size submarine.” This in order to rescue the 12 Thai boys and their soccer coach infamously trapped within the submerged Tham Luang cave complex. According to the Bangkok Post, a nine-person engineering team assembled by Musk has already begun to arrive in the area. Officials were originally relieved to locate the group at all after it became lost in the cave system during heavy rain on June 23rd. But the soccer team’s situation has grown more dire as of late. The threat of further seasonal monsoon rain, and the death of a former Royal Thai Navy special forces diver sent to bolster dwindling oxygen reserves have upped the anxiety surrounding the effort. https://gizmodo.com/elon-musk-says-hes-building-a-tiny-submarine-to-rescue-1827422516 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
