Caffeine and Testosterone: Is coffee bad for you and your health? Coffee, and the caffeine consumption from it, has become a contested topic in health circles over recent years. The Chinese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (CPSQI), a 3-day sleep diary, and the Actigraph sleep/activity logger watch were used to assess the subjective and objective parameters of sleep quality, including time to bed, time of sleep onset, waking time after sleep onset, time of getting up, total sleep time, and self-reported sleep quality and sleep onset latency, waking time after sleep onset, total sleep time, and sleep efficiency before and after the intervention. After 4 weeks of kiwifruit consumption, the subjective CPSQI score, waking time after sleep onset, and sleep onset latency were significantly decreased (42.4%, 28.9%, and 35.4%, respectively). Total sleep time and sleep efficiency were significantly increased (13.4% and 5.41%, respectively). Kiwifruit consumption may improve sleep onset, duration, and efficiency in adults with self-reported sleep disturbances. Further investigation of the sleep-promoting properties of kiwifruit may be warranted. But women too - pay close attention, because I’ve never heard anyone give the advice I am about to give in the next few minutes. Mint is everywhere. It’s in our chewing gum, our teas, our desserts, toothpaste, mouthwash, and even soaps. It tastes great, and I personally used to consume it in some form, every single day… Until I ran across some shocking research I’m going to share with you today regarding its extremely drastic negative effects on human hormones. Mint is a common aromatic herb used to flavor a wide range of consumer products, as well as popular cocktails, juices, and personal care items. It’s also extremely popular when consumed as a tea, especially in European and Middle Eastern cultures where the plant species is native. When I first saw this study in the Journal Urology I was a bit surprised, mostly because I’ve never heard anything specifically bad about mint in the mainstream… for example, if you Google ‘mint tea’ you will just find a massive list of me-too articles talking about how good it is for you. However, if you know me… I don’t trust mainstream advice, especially not at face value. The doctors in the study claim to have pursued the topic of the influence of several different types of mint tea on male androgen levels due solely to the fact that they were hearing persistent complaints of patients about loss of sexual and reproductive function when drinking these teas regularly. They went into the study with no real agenda, just curiosity. http://www.goldjournal.net/article/S0090-4295(04)00418-2/fulltext What they found was very interesting. In testing 48 male wistar rats (it’s too bad they didn’t test humans) they split the subjects into four groups of 12. The control group was given regular drinking water, one group was given 20 g/L peppermint tea, another 20 g/L spearmint tea, and the last group 40 g/L spearmint tea. When compared to the control group, the peppermint tea at 20 g/L reduced total testosterone levels by 23%, whereas the spearmint tea at 20 g/L reduced total T by a whopping 51%. The researchers concluded in the closing remarks… “Despite the beneficial effects of M. piperita and M. spicata in digestion, we should also be aware of the toxic effects when the herbs are not used in the recommended fashion or at the recommended dose.” Another study replicated similar anti-androgenic results just a few years later. Demonstrating how mint induces oxidative stress on the hypothalamus, thus leading to downstream depression of testosterone production. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18804513 I’m not sure why nobody has studied this in human men yet (probably because there is no money in it), but there have been a couple studies in women with hirsutism (ie. high testosterone causing masculine features) demonstrating similar anti-androgen influence of mint on the human endocrine system. Stay away from mint teas, that’s for sure. I would also recommend limiting your exposure to common mint-containing products that could, in any capacity, be absorbed into your endocrine system and act as a hormone disruptor. Toothpaste is probably fine since you’re just spitting it out quickly, but chewing gums (with steady saliva being swallowed), soaps being rubbed on your skin (your most highly absorbent organ), or shampoos and conditioners being rubbed on your scalp, as well as mint in foods and drinks are likely things you don’t want to be consuming regularly. Fenugreek and Testosterone: Galactagogues Increase Prolactin Levels

Fenugreek (trigonella foenum-graecum) is a common herb that originates from the Indian herbal medicine; Ayurveda. Its claimed use is to enhance masculinity and libido. The seed powder and seed extracts of the fenugreek plant are commonly used in various testosterone boosters, and some manufacturers claim that it would be the single most effective natural compound to raise male testosterone levels, muscular gains, bedroom performance, and so on. But is fenugreek truly as effective of a test boosters the marketers claim it to be? Let’s have a closer look. Fenugreek, Testosterone, DHT, and Prolactin Fenugreek supplements to increase testosterone production Most people think that fenugreek is only used as an ingredient to normalize and increase male testosterone levels. This isn’t the case. Since fenugreek also contains galactagogues which have the distinctive ability to increase prolactin levels, which is why fenugreek is also marketed to women to increase their lactation during pregnancy. Although men taking fenugreek won’t likely start producing milk, it’s still very much likely that supplementing with the herb can lead to elevated prolactin, which is somewhat detrimental for testosterone production via inhibition of dopamine. For obvious reasons, the T-booster manufacturers using fenugreek are pretty silent about the issue. Prolactin aside, does fenugreek actually increase testosterone levels as claimed? The answer is maybe, but likely not. You see, initial studies (sponsored by fenugreek manufacturer) showed very promising results, as fenugreek supplementation increased testosterone levels and improved body composition in resistance trained males. Since the herb has compounds such as apigenin, luteolin, protodioscin, magnesium, and calcium – all of which can contribute to increased testosterone production – it was all but plausible that fenugreek would become the next big thing in the supplement industry (and it certainly did). The thing is that fenugreek extracts haven’t always performed this well on scientific studies. Although in rodents, the extract increased muscle growth, it failed to have any impact on circulating testosterone levels. In an effort to replicate the first human study sponsored by Indus Biotech, Bushey et al. found that in their trial, fenugreek did not increase either free or total testosterone levels, but it ended up lowering DHT due to 5-a reductase inhibitory effect.
