Anyway, these bro-science brothers all kinda glaze over, with this distant squinty gaze in their eyes and start with a long drawn out, "But duuuuuuuude, if I stop eating meat and eggs and milk and stuff, where am I going to get my protein?" This question makes a number of presumptions that require some further thought: How much protein do we actually need each day? Okinawans average 38g of protein each day, most of it plant based. We will explore the 'How Much Protein' question in "Dude, Where's My Protein Part 2" Where do other species get their protein from if they don't eat meat? Gorillas and Elephants? When you look at vegan bodybuilders, they build seriously impressive muscular physiques eating just 50-70g of protein per day, around 2 1/2 oz. So let's ask another key question: At what age or stage of our life do we and other mammals gain the most muscle and body mass as a percentage? Although Doctors are generally pretty smart people, They Just Don't Have Much Traning on Nutrition and Health at all! But if we are REALLY honest with ourselves, we all KNOW that these types of food aren't that good for us, in fact a diet high in processed food, refined sugar, white flour, high fructose corn syrup and preservatives is shown to promote obesity, heart disease, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. So we may get away with the occasional cheat meal, but is this type of diet capable of promoting long term health? Short answer: Absolutely not. Hell No! But what this demonstrates is that us humans are great adapters. We can live for a period of time eating all sorts of crap foods that aren't good for us, but is that going to promote vibrant health, energy and longevity? Hell No! In fact, the 2004 documentary 'SuperSize Me' shows how eating fast food and junk food destroys us physically, emotionally an physiologically. BUT, if You actually WANT to live a long, happy, vibrantly healthy life, THEN You NEED to find out what the Healthy People and Healthy Cultures are doing. So, The China Study is 417 pages based on one of the largest and most comprehensive studies of human nutrition ever conducted, launched via a partnership between Cornell and Oxford University, and the Chinese Academy of Preventative Medicine, with data collected over a span of 27 years. It found that excess animal protein promotes cancer growth and that we need to reduce the consumption of animal protein by at least 70%. Also, heart disease can be reversed through nutrition. Dr Michael Greger found from his review of the scientific literature, that the Top 15 killers in the USA are lifestyle related and will be largely eliminated if we adopted a whole foods, plant based diet, limiting processed foods and oils. Blue Zones, the longevity study examined by author Dan Buettner, discovered that the Okinawans and Seventh Day Adventists of Loma Linda, California, eat a plant based diet, limiting the consumption of animal protein to less than 21 grams a day, allowing these two communities of people to live, on average 8-10 years longer than other Western cultures, with very few cases of heart disease, stroke, diabetes or various cancers. So, the population studies and scientific literature is fairly conclusive when it comes to what we eat and the impact it has on our health. But common sense and comparing our human characteristics with the physical characteristics of different species from the animal kingdom, also gives a strong indication of our historic diet and what we are designed to eat. Even though we have teeth 'called' canines, they bare little resemblance to the canine teeth of true carnivores like Lions, Tigers and Wolves. Also, our mouths are relatively small, unlike the mouths of meat eating predators. Our saliva contains Carbohydrate digesting enzymes like amylase, the same as other herbivores. Our hands have fingers, great for picking fruits and vegetables, not claws for tearing flesh and bringing down prey, with flattened fingernails like other herbivores. Carnivores produce Vitamin C in their gut, while we require it from our diet, like all herbivores. High cholesterol is only an issue for non carnivores. True carnivores thrive on high cholesterol. Many people are taken from us too soon and die young, so why did this champion's tragic passing affect me so much? Many reasons really: Dean was always a phenomenal competitor, unfazed by large surf and often winning against the odds. He had the heart of a lion and always gave his all- he seemed bulletproof and larger than life. He died aged 47. I will be 47 in November. He was an elite athlete and always supremely fit. His untimely death high-lighted the difference between Fitness and Health. Even supremely fit people are not automatically healthy as well. His heart condition could not have been genetic because surely it would have been uncovered during training or competition. It appears that his condition could only have been acquired as a result of lifestyle habits. The standard Western diet contributes to heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, chronic inflammation and even some cancers. We are focused on sharing the research findings that enable everyone to make better informed health choices and Dean's tragic death will serve as a timely reminder drive us forward in our mission to positively impact the lives, health and well-being of 1 million people over 40 worldwide. The 4th Agreement, in my view is potentially the most impactful on a day to day basis. The 4th Agreement simply states: "Always Do Your Best". When it comes to taking massive action for better health, Your results may vary from day to day. You may be tired, stiff and achey, unmotivated or generally not at your best on any given day, But, and it is an important BUT: So long as you can honestly say that you gave your best effort in the circumstances, in your exercise, in your eating regime or whatever area of your life, it doesn't matter if it is not as good as your best effort on your best day. It's time to begin internally validating your efforts and not rely so much on the opinions of others: If you are consistently doing your best, it doesn't matter what the haters think, you will continue to become fitter, stronger, healthier, more vibrant and energetic, and at the end of the day, you will be able to look at yourself in the mirror and say to yourself: "Yes, I am happy and content that my life is the end result of my decisions, my actions and my honest efforts." So some days, You are going to just have to get through Your workout in any way possible, it may not be pretty, Always Do Your Best and then CELEBRATE that You fronted up and Did Your Best, even when and ESPECIALLY when You didn't feel like doing it or didn't even think that You COULD do it. Internally validate: Yes, Be critical when You KNOW You are not bringing Your A-game, But Equally as important, OR even more importantly, BE YOUR OWN BIGGEST CHEERLEADER, BIG YOURSELF UP AND CELEBRATE when You Do Your Best, irrespective of the result. NIKE got it WRONG

I'm sure that You are just like me in many ways. And if You are like me, there are many times when I couldn't "JUST DO IT." Sometimes the change was just too big and sometimes I didn't even know WHY I couldn't "JUST DO IT" and sometimes the pressure I put on myself was just ridiculous, so I changed my mantra to "JUST START." Here's How it works: If You can't do 20 squats yet, here's what You do: "JUST START" by doing 3, or 5 or 10 or whatever challenges you to begin your fitness journey. If You can't get your head around starting a new diet, here's what You do: "JUST START" by adding a few more salad leaves, more beans or zucchinis (Courgettes if you are English) and a few more vegetables onto your plate. If You aren't yet ready to do a fast, here's what You do: "JUST START" by pushing your breakfast back an hour or two on the weekend. If You can't run for 5 km (3 miles), here's what You do: "JUST START" by going for a 10 minute walk. If You are sore after exercising and can't even think about your next workout, here's what You do: "JUST START" by doing some stretching and doing easier versions of exercises. If You can't imagine cutting back on the cans of soda, Coke and energy drinks, here's what You do: "JUST START" by drinking a glass of water before you reach for the can of soda. A lot of the time, any changes in habits, diet, exercise and lifestyle is too extreme and daunting to "JUST DO IT.". But by applying our mantra of "JUST START", build momentum and soon you will create powerful new habits that will set you up for lifelong success. And when You "JUST START" on anything new, You can't expect to be very good straight away. After all, You are like a baby learning to stand and walk for the first time, You may look clumsy and You may fall. But when a baby falls, everyone around them cheers them on, saying things like: "Great effort, Good job, Keep going, You can do it!"...and sure enough, the baby gets up and tries and tries and tries until they succeed. So "JUST START" and remember to cheer yourself on and try again, and again, until all those little changes and improvements add up into a life of Health, Fitness, Energy, Vitality, Longevity and Happiness. So, the take home message is this: JUST START: Fail, fall down, get up and go again, at anything and everything that is worthwhile and matters to You. Cheer yourself on, ride the momentum of "JUST START" and pretty soon, You will have made some real progress that has a profound impact on Your Amazing Life. People who play the victim role and never get ahead in life can be spotted a mile away by their behaviours and the language they use... They Blame, make Excuses and are in Denial about the cause of their life's problems. I probably sound a bit harsh right now, but just as success leaves clues, so does victim behaviour...the good news is that we can change our behaviours AND change the result. We MUST Make The Decision to step across the invisible line that separates Victims from Victors, take Ownership of our circumstances, become Accountable for our actions and take Responsibility for the quality of our life and CHOOSE to Live Above the Line...only THEN can we take the steps to make it how we want it. Let's look at a health related example: If you eat 5 fry ups a week (my friends in the UK know exactly what I'm talking about here: a plate full of greasy bacon, eggs and sausages..all fried...the only saving grace is the cooked tomato, but not a green vegetable to be found anywhere) or basically, if you eat a crap diet full of animal products and processed foods, don't exercise and aren't very active, drink a bottle of soda/pop/coke/fanta/pepsi/red bull etc etc you cannot expect to be healthy... In fact, let's stop kidding ourselves and start making healthier choices. You don't have to dig too deeply to know that those aren't the eating and exercise habits of champions, they are the lifestyle habits that contribute to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, metabolic syndrome, stroke, kidney disease, dementia, autoimmune diseases and a plethora of other conditions that will destroy your quality of life and probably kill you prematurely. So, what's my point here? If you treat your body like a toilet and fill it with crap food, don't exercise and end up needing heart bypass surgery, don't expect the rest of society to pay for your mistake poor choices: So, maybe it's time to get Out of BED...Stop Blaming and making excuses for YOUR own Actions, Own It, Take Responsibility and Take the Necessary Steps to Make a Meaningful Change to Improve Your Life. Applied Knowledge is the Best Health Insurance Money Can't Buy. And this is not just a message for us adults over 40...if we want to make a REAL and meaningful change in the world, here's what You do: Learn it, own it, live by example...AND...Teach it to your kids. Every time I think of 'X-spurts', I'm always reminded of what one of my science teachers used to say: "That 'x' is an unknown quantity and 'spurt' is a drip under pressure." In other words, don't just blindly believe what 'x-spurts' tell you... Any Expert. When it comes to Your Health, You need to become responsible for the decisions You make. You need to be able to make an informed choice because whether You are sick or Healthy, succumb to a lifestyle illness or live a long, happy and vibrantly healthy life comes down to the decisions and choices that You make for yourself AND your loved ones. And unfortunately, not ALL of the information is in Your best interests: Pharmaceutical companies are in business for profit and pharmaceutical drugs regularly have unwanted side effects. The Diet and Supplement industry is a multi-billion dollar industry. Bro-science is often given without any basis in science or sound nutritional principles AND There are so many fad diets, exercise programs, gimmicks and gadgets that are just plain wrong and don't deliver on what they promise. So whether it is me, or anyone else, RULE #1: Don't Believe A Thing That I Say. Don't blindly believe what you see on TV, hear on the radio, newspapers, the internet, your trainer at the gym, your grandmother or anywhere else. Verify what I say by checking the Research First. And then do that for any other so-called 'trusted source.' That is WHY we Reference Everything we talk about in our YouTube clips, emails, Facebook page and anywhere else we share information. And once You check the sources, You will KNOW what sources of information deserves Your Trust, what information to avoid, and most importantly, You will be able to make well informed decisions when it comes to the Health, Fitness, Vitality and Longevity of You and Your loved ones. Freak accidents can destroy it in a heartbeat. We can't control what other people do, say or think about us. Our children? Maybe in the short term, but not long term. Our mindset is really the only thing we have absolute control over, regardless of the circumstances we may find ourselves in. Become totally responsible for the thoughts you allow into your beautiful mind and the actions you take, regardless of the circumstances you find yourself in and you will become the architect for your amazing life and the impact you will have on your friends, family and loved ones will be amazing. So, using the analogy of the Chicken and the Pig, the Chicken offers insight and advice, the Pig takes full responsibility for the consequences of its' actions and inactions and is fully aware that it reaps what it sows. So, find good quality advice, become better informed and educated, then take full responsibility for your actions. That's HOW You take control over Your Life. No matter well intentioned we may be, no matter how disciplined we are, no matter how motivated and enthusiastic you may start out, sometimes we can end up in a rut, struggling with motivation and find it easy to fall back into old, unproductive habits. So, here are my 4 tips to getting out of a rut, rebuild your resolve and staying motivated so that You can Smash Your Health and Fitness Goals: 1. Reconnect with Your WHY: Why did you want to get fitter, healthier, stronger in the first place? Was it to look better, feel better, to get back into your skinny jeans or your favourite black dress, was it so you can look great walking your daughter down the aisle on her wedding day, was it so you have the energy to play with the kids or grandkids or was it because your doctor told you that you are a heart attack waiting to happen? So Step 1, reconnect with Your Reasons WHY. Check out our video HERE to Help You: https://youtu.be/stT6yL1wEvE 2. Take a selfie. Do it each week or fortnight and monitor Your progress. Strip down to your undies, get in front of the mirror and take 1 pic from the front and 1 pic from the side. Set Yourself a Challenge: Everybody loves a challenge, an opportunity to shine, to grow, to be better than they were yesterday. Yes folks, that's Aussie Rules, an oxymoron because there are bugger all rules really, but what else would you expect from a bunch of colonials sent here as convicts 200 odd years ago?
