PHILIPPINES: VIAGRA GOES ON SALE NATIONWIDE

03:27
Tagalog/Eng/Nat Viagra, the headline grabbing anti-impotency pill, is now on sale in the Philippines. Pfizer, who manufacture the drug, have started delivering to local drugstores in Manila, two weeks after the local Bureau of Food and Drug gave its approval for its sale in the country. Pharmacies in the Philippines have finally begun to receive their stocks of Viagra. The manufacturer Pfizer, started deliveries of the new wonder drug at drugstores in Manila this week. Some stores already began selling the drug on Tuesday. With Viagra becoming the talk of the town, drugstore owners are anticipating a huge demand. Pharmacy owner Bhoyette Vizconde sold five tablets on the first day. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I already hoard (laughs) stocks because I'm really expecting that being the first to have Viagra here in our vicinity, I'm sure a lot of people will come here and inquire or buy Viagra." SUPER CAPTION: Bhoyette Vizconde, Owner of Marcelo's Pharmacy Pharmacy Plus received its first supply early this week. Owner James Sandoval, who owns several stores in the capital, put a few boxes of the pill on the shelf to show clients that the drug is now available. But before the drug was put on sale in his stores, Sandoval issued a memo to all his store managers to ensure that safety precautions are practiced before the drug is dispensed to patients. The B-F-A-D says it is important the pill is only sold to patients who come with a legitimate prescription from their doctors. Each pill comes with a leaflet giving warnings of possible side-effects if the drug is not taken properly. Pfizer warned that the drug should not be taken by people being treated with nitrate-based medication for heart problems. While he expects a huge demand for the drug, Sandoval said Filipino men may be a little shy of asking for the drug themselves. He says the men here will probably not want to admit they need Viagra and so he is arranging a home delivery service to put them out of their misery. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Because maybe at the secrecy of their own home, they can acquire the product because they might be too embarrassed to come forward to admit that they have a sexual problem. Any person that comes forward asking about the product - they're so defensive, they say right away "Hey listen I don't have a problem with this. I'm just inquiring". That goes to tell you how sensitive the issue is." SUPER CAPTION: James Sandoval, Owner of A-B Sandoval Drugstore Dr. Jesus Mendoza is a local doctor who has been checking out the testing of the Viagra drug. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Well, I was pretty excited and wanted to find out whether it was really going to work. Of course, there was some degree of skepticism at first. But when we started seeing back the patients who were on the study, then it was confirmed that my gosh, this works." SUPER CAPTION: Dr. Jesus Mendoza, Urologist In a press conference early this month, Pfizer said the approval from B-F-A-D came after they completed a six-month study of its effects on 500 men from six Asian countries, including the Philippines. The man who discovered Viagra, Dr. Peter Ellis, was in Manila last week and spoke of how his drug differs from the others already available in the market. SOUNDBITE: (English) "And I think the beauty of the drug is that it works to enhance the natural process. All the other products that are out there, you take the product, you get an erection. But Viagra, you take the product, you don't get an erection but it's only when sexually aroused. So it's basically enhancing a perfectly natural function and restoring it back to normal." SUPER CAPTION: Dr. Peter Ellis, Discoverer of Viagra SOUNDBITE: (Tagalog) You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/82332744ffb865c4de45bb3f42e9c31f Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork

Fake Canadian pharmacy scammers ties to sell me Viagra.

13:20
Scammers who sell fake pharmaceutical drugs claim they are Canadian pharmacies in an attempt to target Americans who pay much more for pharmaceutical drugs than Canadians do because of government laws on drug pricing. I decided to troll one of these scammers just to see how these scams work. Instead, I talked to a girl who barely could speak English and tries to sell me drugs that treat Erectile Dysfunction. It seems she did not even know what those drugs are for! As always, Never fall victim to this or any other scams from unknown suspicious callers! Twitter: @itsomedudeguy http://Somedudeguy.com

PAKISTAN: VIAGRA FINDS ITS WAY ONTO THE BLACK MARKET

02:57
Urdu/Eng/Nat Doctors in Pakistan are warning of the dangers of men buying the impotence pill Viagra on the black market and taking it without prescription. The sale of the drug in the country is currently being debated by the government - it says it wants to make sure the drug will be made available in the safest possible way. But medical experts say the problem of impotency is high in the country and that men are anxious to try out supplies of Viagra introduced illegally at a high price. Viagra, the impotency pill, is proving to be big business in Pakistan. The drug, first released in the U-S in March 1998, is legally available in more than 50 countries worldwide. Many people consider it the beginning of a new revolution in pharmaceuticals. In Pakistan, the government is currently discussing when and how to introduce the drug. But Viagra has already found its way onto the black market in the country's capital Islamabad and can be bought at a high price. One tablet can cost anything from 20 to 50 U-S dollars - a bottle of Viagra tablets can cost anything from 360 to 800 U-S dollars. Some Viagra users say the drug has been freely available to them for some time now and that they're prepared to pay up. SOUNDBITE: (Urdu) "Viagra is a sex drug and I have been using it for about two years and found it very good, because it adds energy to the body if we use it two hours before sexual intercourse. I have found no other medicine better than Viagra and the demand for it is now growing." SUPER CAPTION: Abdul Qadir, Viagra user The country's health department has so far been reluctant to legalise Viagra - but it is aware of the black market problem and is prosecuting anyone found selling the drug. Government officials say they want to make sure that there are no loopholes before Viagra is legally available in Pakistan. SOUNDBITE: (English) "In the West they know that this drug has got side effects and that it is a prescription drug. So nobody can buy it without prescription, while in Pakistan we still have some loopholes, some weaknesses where the drug can be sold over the counter and this is my main worry in resisting to register it." SUPER CAPTION: Professor Ghayyur H. Ayub, Director General of Health Ministry There have been worries that Viagra may have side effects. But Pfizer, the company that produces Viagra, maintains the drug is a safe medicine for erectile dysfunction when used as recommended in the approved package insert. There are already many legal drugs on sale in Pakistan to help enhance sex. Herbal doctors offer remedies for impotency, claiming they're natural products that have no side effects. The herbal remedy sellers can often be found on roadsides doing a roaring trade - but even they now say that the new wonder drug is threatening their trade. Medical experts say there is no official impotency figure in the country because Pakistani men are reluctant to admit they have a problem in a nation where sex is a taboo subject. But doctors say it is an ever increasing problem and they are warning of the dangers of taking the impotence pill without prescription. Doctor Khalid Saeed said it is even more of a worry as impotency affects men of all ages. SOUNDBITE: (English) "There are two basic main groups in which we can find this who come to us commonly. One is the younger age group - they are really people in their early 20s and the other group is somewhere in the late 40s and 50s and both of them have different presentations. People in the younger age group generally come to you just before they are about to get married." SUPER CAPTION: Dr Khalid Saeed, Consultant Psychiatrist at the Institute of Psychiatry, Rawalpindi In the meantime, they are encouraging people to seek alternative remedies. TAIWAN: VIAGRA CAKE PROVES POPULAR WITH THE LADIES

01:37
Mandarin/Nat A Taipei bakery has added a new cake to its selection of baked goods and it's shaped like a huge Viagra pill. Viagra has a special appeal for many Taiwanese - the drug only became available in the country a few months ago. Many of the cakes are actually being bought by women, eager to serve them to boyfriends despite the fact they don't actually contain any of the drug. Viagra, first released in the U-S in March 1998, is legally available in more than 50 countries. The little blue pill, which assists in producing penile erections, is now also available in Taiwan, and has become increasingly popular since it was imported a few months ago. Taiwan papers have reported that during last year's Taiwan elections a candidate was seen giving away free Viagra pills in a bid to win favour with the public. Now, a Taiwan bakery is capitalising on Viagra's popularity and is using the drug as a way to sell cakes and increase profits. The bakery's owner says, the cake contains many beneficial herbs that are good for health. SOUNDBITE : (Mandarin) "Our cake is different from the VIAGRA pill in drug effect. It is very healthy and it contains many beneficial herbs that can keep you in a good mood when you eat it." SUPERCAPTION : Chang Pi-o, store owner Bakery owner Chang says the herbs include a mix of Chinese Aloe, Dandelion and Rosa laevigata which contains vitamins A, B, and C which are good for the liver and improve the immune system. Chang also said that the new cakes can attract more young female customers to the bakery. But the bakery named the cake "Viager" to avoid any charges that it was violating copy rights of the Viagra manufacturer. The bakery only sells eighteen of these big tablets per day. Customers have to book the cake a week in advance and it's difficult to get one any earlier. Most female buyers love to buy the cake as a gift for their boyfriends. They think that the pill-style cake has cool design with funny sexual appeal. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) " I want to buy the Viagra cake for my boyfriend as a birthdaycake. I hope this huge pill-style cake can make him happy." SUPERCAPTION : Vox pop, girl buyer. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) " I think the cake only looks cute, It's no big deal." SUPERCAPTION : Vox pop, lady buyer. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) " The cake really looks like a big viagra pill, it's so cool. (Reporter Question: Do you expect that the cake can give you the same effect like real pill?) No, i don't need it, because i am still young." SUPERCAPTION : Vox Pop, girl buyer. One Viagra cake cost 599 New Taiwanese dollars (20 US dollars), the price in Chinese means, "I got a long long life". Because of the cake sells with various healthy material, many customers thought that the cake is better than the real Viagra pill. They all wish to keep eating cake not only for a good mood also hope to get a long long life. Mid of neon sign 16. Mid of girls dancing, legs only visible 17. Mid of neon lights advertising karaoke and Thai massage STORYLINE Thai police presented a haul of counterfeit viagra and other goods to the media on Tuesday, seized from various locations in Bangkok. The pills - often imported from China and India - are sold "under the counter" and help fuel the city''s notorious sex industry. They''re the right size, shape and colour. Even the packaging looks convincing, but the only thing that''s real about these pills is the potential threat to buyers, police say. Thai police raided stalls and shops in the capital last week after complaints from the public. They seized thousands of boxes of counterfeit viagra, levitra and other sexual stimulants, gels and sprays with an estimated street value of around 16-thousand US dollars. According to officials at the Food and Drug Administration, the counterfeit drugs often have far higher doses of the active ingredient than is safe; in the case of some fake viagra, they say, as much as ten times the stated amount. The FDA''s secretary-general, Dr. Pipat Yingseree, said such overdoses could kill. There are no figures on how many people die in Thailand each year as a result of taking sex pills but it''s often cited as a factor in sudden deaths, especially of visiting males. As well as the pills, police also seized sex toys, which are illegal in Thailand under obscenity laws. Bangkok has a well-established sex industry, serving tourists as well as locals. Some of the stalls and shops raided by police last week were in the Nana district, one of the most notorious red light districts. Dr. Lykins Compares the Cost of Viagra or Cialis to RejuvaFlow™

01:08
The cost of Viagra is between $20 and $30 per pill. If you look at the cost over a period of time and the number of trips to the drug store RejuvaFlow™ is clearly the better option - you only have to visit a doctor every three months for treatment and you get so many other benefits from the procedure. It really is cost effective and non-invasive with no side effects. Patients are carefully screened, people that do not qualify for treatment are those with aortic or brain aneurysms. Overall the procedure is very safe.

TAIWAN: VIAGRA ENTERS PHARMACEUTICAL MARKET

02:23
Mandarin/Nat A hundred thousand tablets of the impotence drug Viagra have finally entered Taiwan's pharmaceutical market and legislators are worried that Taiwan women would become sex tools as a result. The Pfizer-manufactured potent drugs were flown into Taiwan on Tuesday and hospitals across the island were advised by the Health Department that all Viagra distributed to hospitals must be locked up in the director's safe box. Black market Viagra can be bought for U-S 65 dollars per tablet, but is now available through a doctor's prescription. However, Health Department officials warned hospitals that if the imported Viagra was not locked up, the drug could be stolen. Meanwhile various women's right groups have expressed that with the open availability of the drug, Taiwan women's status in a male dominated society would be more degraded than ever. Doctors and urologists say Taiwan men in general don't need Viagra and only purchase them out of curiosity. SOUNDBITE : (Mandarin) "About 52 per cent of the Taiwan men are impotent but not too seriously. The men that really have impotency problems lie around 20 per cent. But in Taiwan, only one out of ten men need Viagra." SUPERCAPTION : Dr Jiang Han-Sen, urologist at Department of Genitourinary Medicine at Taipei Medical Hospital The drug, first released in the U-S in March 1998, is legally available in more than 50 countries worldwide. Many people consider it the beginning of a new revolution in pharmaceuticals. Taiwan papers have reported that last year's Taiwan election saw a candidate giving away free Viagra pills in a bid to win favour with the public. The Legislative Council saw lawmakers expressing agony over the fad of Viagra in Taiwan. One lawmaker said the last thing Taiwan needs is Viagra. He even mocked that Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs needed Viagra rather than the general public. SOUNDBITE : (Mandarin) "We have shaky relationship with Vatican and Panama. I wish to present this gigantic Viagra which is made of 1000 tablets to our Ministry of Foreign Affairs so that they can come up with the energy to vitalize our international relationship and not let Beijing beat us down." SUPERCAPTION : Lin Cheng-Tze, lawmaker (KMT party) Women lawmakers are worried that the local media have been carrying reports of Viagra to excess. SOUNDBITE : (Mandarin) "It seems like all Taiwan men have become potent! And all they do is talk about Viagra. Without Viagra, they can't live. This is ridiculous. We can't let this Viagra craze continue! SUPERCAPTION : Chen Tsai Mei-Jo, lawmaker (KMT Party) Another female lawmaker says she is worried Taiwan women may be portrayed as a sex tools. SOUNDBITE : (Mandarin) "Taiwanese women aren't portrayed as a loved one. Instead, they are being portrayed as a sex tool. Because of this, women in general have been disgraced." SUPERCAPTION : Chen Shau-Ping, lawmaker (KMT Party) Other lawmakers who opposed the women's comments told newspaper reporters that Viagra is one of the greatest inventions of this century. Others believe that the use of Viagra will stop the increase in sexual assault in the country. What is Flibanserin (AKA "Female Viagra")?

"Female Viagra" and regular or "male" Viagra were both originally investigated as treatments for conditions other than sexual dysfunction. Viagra came out of studies on hypertension, and "female Viagra" for depression. But… that's where most of the similarities end. How so? Let's discuss. Flibanserin, sometimes called "female Viagra", is the topic of this week's Healthcare Triage. Special thanks to Rachel Hoffman for making this week's episode possible. Thanks, Rachel! 5 Weird Things The Government Spent Money On

03:35
The Department of Defense spent more than a half a million dollars on the male enhancement drug Viagra in 2014, according to government contracts. The Pentagon issued 60 contracts worth $504,816 for the drug, all of which were awarded to Cardinal Health Inc., a pharmaceutical distribution company based in Dublin, Ohio. DoD began offering Viagra to soldiers as a medical benefit in 1998 when the drug cost $10 a pill. In 2015, one pill costs $25. At the time, the military's policy only allowed for six pills a month per patient, and the DoD said they would “not replace lost or stolen pills.” The DoD also ordered other popular erectile dysfunction drugs including $3,505 worth of Levitra and $14,540 of Cialis. The contracts were filed under “Troop Support.” A website, Washington Free Beacon, did the math. At $25 a pill, the amount of Viagra purchased by the Pentagon could have led to up to 80,770 hours, 33 minutes, and 36 seconds of sexual enhancement, assuming that no erection lasted more than the medically advised 4 hour maximum. 1) Viagra ($504,816) : http://tinyurl.com/op74xdd 2) Facebook "Likes" ($630,000) : http://tinyurl.com/kqbjdf6 3) The First Sexual Experiences of Young Gay Men ($410,265 and counting) : http://tinyurl.com/nm2mr77 4) A Video Game In Which A Player Escapes A City Where Residents Are Only Allowed Junk Food ($10 Million) : http://tinyurl.com/lvngfks 5) A Romance Novel Website ($914,000): http://tinyurl.com/lawr7ol

INDIA: PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES RACE TO PRODUCE A VIAGRA CLONE

02:52
Hindi/English/Nat Viagra may have made a sensational debut on the Western market but a different kind of competition awaits the anti-impotence pill in India. Favourable patent laws have spurred a race among the Indian pharmaceutical companies to produce a Viagra clone. However, India's traditional doctors have snubbed the Viagra hype, claiming their ancient herbal sex potions are far more potent - and cheaper - than any modern day pill. The race for the Indian version of Viagra is on. Just months after the anti-impotency pill hit the Western world, dozens of Indian versions of the drug are waiting for approval by the Indian government. India is one of world's largest drug industries but it only recognises process patents. This has prompted "copycats" to try to develop a slightly different process to make a Viagra clone. Presently, about 10 Indian pharmaceutical companies are in the race to process Sildenafil Citrate - the active ingredient in the Viagra wonder pill. The competition is so fierce that some companies have already started exporting the ingredient - even though they are still waiting for permission to market the product locally. What's driving these companies is a potential market of one (b) billion people - and that means big dollars. SOUNDBITE ( English) "As far as Indian companies are concerned, I am talking of established companies, definitely they will come up with very high quality. And price advantage will be there, it is definite... it is almost certain." SUPER CAPTION: Dr. S Sarangan, Kopran Limited In the land of Kama Sutra, sexual inadequacies have long been treated by ancient medical wisdom. On the streets of the Indian capital, hundreds of pavement doctors line the streets peddling traditional cures for impotence. For these roadside doctors, a strong belief in the potency of their magic potions is more important than conducting clinical trials. They claim their remedies offer vigour and vitality - using the rejuvenating properties of well known Indian herbs. These traditional remedies feature heavily in Indian folklore about Mughal emperors and kings who relied on herbal aphrodisiacs to keep their numerous wives satisfied. What's more - they're incredibly cheap. For a country where the problem lies more in ignorance than impotence, traditional alternatives are generally favoured. Sex clinics which offer indigenous cures boast a roaring trade. Run by a family of sexologists who practise traditional medicine, Sablok clinic has been in the business for nearly 70 years. Dr. Sablok scoffs at the hype created by Viagra and says the Indian masses just can't afford the expensive blue pill. SOUNDBITE ( English) "Making that person feel the pleasure out of a pill which you have given him at that moment and which.....obviously its expensive - I mean every other fellow can't afford it. So next time if he doesn't have that much money or he can't spend that much of amount , where does he go ?" SUPER CAPTION : Dr. Vikram Sablok , Sexologist India's lucrative sex-tonic market has attracted dozens of companies aggressively marketing various brands of attractively packaged, indigenous sex-elixirs. Advocates say Viagra can do no damage to their profitable trade - simply because their medication is without any side effects. SOUNDBITE (English) "We have very potent herbs and remedies which can definitely match Viagra - no doubt about it. In fact I should say that hopefully we will be a step ahead of them." SUPER CAPTION: Dr. Vikram Sablok, Sexologist In India's commercial capital, Bombay, Viagra is likely to face competition of a different kind. The current big seller is known as the "bed-breaker" thanks to its aphrodisiac additives. BRAZIL: SALES OF VIAGRA BOOMING

02:46
Portuguese/Nat One year after Viagra was launched in Brazil, the so-called miracle pill has become one of the biggest selling drugs in the country's history. Over five million pills have been taken by Brazilian men since it's introduction last June. For many, Brazil is the capital of sun, samba and sex. When Viagra was introduced one year ago, you would have been forgiven for thinking that Brazilian men would turn their backs on the miracle pill - seeing it as an unnecessary addition to their already sizzling lifestyle. But on the contrary, Viagra has taken off. Over five million pills have been bought in its first year on the market - and it shows no sign of slowing. So far the manufacturers of the male impotence drug, Pfizer, have made nearly 30 (m) million U-S dollars profit in Brazil alone. Brazil was the second country to put the drug on the market - after the United States - and over 100 thousand men in Brazil now take Viagra on a regular basis. But despite its success, not everyone will admit to needing it. SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese) "No. I would not take it. Why? I am still young, aren't I?" SUPER CAPTION: Roberto dos Santos, Drainage Worker SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese) "I would admit (to taking Viagra). I don't see any shame in admitting something that I have the need to take. It's a physical deficiency that you are getting through isn't it? I think it's normal to talk about it." SUPER CAPTION: Jose Carlos Araujo, Accountant SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese) "I haven't taken it yet but I would take it without any problem. I think it's the discovery of the century for men." SUPER CAPTION: Helio Santos, Businessman This chemist in downtown Rio de Janeiro sells on average 12 boxes per day. Each box contains four pills and is priced at between 55 and 60 reals - approximately 25 U-S dollars. But even the cost is not deterring buyers, who have to see a doctor first to get a prescription. Ten percent of all men visiting doctors now ask for help with impotence. SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese) "Normally they wait for a moment when the counter is empty, with no-one around, then they hand over their prescription. The pick up the medicine discreetly and go straight to the cashier, without saying anything." SUPER CAPTION: Odelio de Aguiar, Pharmacist In a recent study on Viagra in Brazil, 82 percent of men claim to have improved their sexual performance after taking the medicine. And it's not only older men who are turning to Viagra. After Pfizer, spent one-point-three million (m) dollars on an advertising campaign, younger men are now resorting to the pill. Of the 100 thousand men currently using the pill, 30 thousand don't suffer from any form of impotence. SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese) "It's true. There is a very significant percentage of individuals that come to us, or to other specialists, trying to experience the medicine even if they don't have a specific complaint with a sexual disfunction. They come to us looking for the possibility of improving their performance. And, actually, the results show a significant improvement on their performance." SUPER CAPTION: Doctor Luiz Carlos Miranda, Urologist The growing success of Viagra in Brazil has led Pfizer to consider setting up a manufacturing laboratory in Sao Paulo to produce it nationally. Brazil would also act as an export centre for the rest of Latin America. And with sales continuing to climb every month, the success story seems set to continue. As first female libido drug hits the market, more options in

00:33
YOUR DESCRIPTION HAS REACHED THE LIMIT OF CHARACTERS ALLOWED AND WAS CUT. WASHINGTON (CBS NEWS) -- Most women with low sexual desire won't rush to get the first prescription drug to boost female libido when it becomes available on Saturday. But they may have more options down the road. Addyi is a daily medication that can't be taken with alcohol or certain other drugs, which will likely limit its use. But experts believe those restrictions could spur development of better treatments for women's sexual problems after more than a decade of neglect by most of the world's large drugmakers. Kim Wallen, a psychology professor at Emory University, says Addyi represents a historic milestone that may open the door to more drugs targeting desire in men and women. Where Viagra and other men's erectile dysfunction drugs work by increasing blood flow to the genitals, Addyi acts on brain chemicals associated with desire. "This is the first time that a drug, for either men or women, has been approved strictly to increase sexual desire," Wallen says. "That legitimizes many other drugs that are in development." Treatments for women's libido issues are an untapped financial opportunity for drugmakers. Analysts estimate the market could be worth over billion, based on academic estimates that between 5 million and 9 million U.S. women may suffer from desire disorders. But the area hasn't been a research priority for drugmakers in many years. Beginning in the 1990s, Pfizer, Bayer and Procter Gamble all studied - then discarded - drugs targeting female libido. Addyi itself was developed by the German conglomerate, Boehringer Ingelheim, then sold to Sprout Pharmaceuticals after the Food and Drug Administration rejected the medication due to lackluster effectiveness and issues like nausea, fatigue and dizziness. It took Sprout four years to win FDA approval for Addyi, which was finally granted in August, on the third try. "They really struggled with this, even agonized over the decision," said CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook. "Because they said the benefits were kind of modest and there were some significant side effects they were worried about: dizziness, sleepiness, and when used with alcohol, fainting." The drug, which acts on brain chemicals associated with mood and appetite, will come with a bold warning label about the risks of fainting if combined with alcohol or certain medications. Additionally, doctors and pharmacists must complete an online certification process to show they understand the drug's risks. Dr. Lisa Dabney says several patients have asked her about Addyi, but they generally lose interest after she explains they cannot drink alcohol while taking the daily medication. "It's definitely an option that's going to help patients," says Dabney, of New York's Mt. Sinai hospital. "But it's going to have a limited patient audience because of the alcohol restrictions and the fact that you have to take it every day." Still, some women credit the drug with saving their relationships. Amanda Parrish, 52, had been married for three years when she realized she was avoiding sex with her husband. Her doctor said it was natural to lose sexual interest with age and suggested she try a vibrator. But nothing worked until Parrish enrolled in a trial of Addyi, which was studied in women who report distress due to a lack of libido. "It just brought me back to where I was as far as being flirty and playful," says Parrish, who lives in Nashville. "I went back to the days of leaving notes on his window, in his car, on his mirror in the morning." Sheri Mike, a 34-year-old mother of two, told CBS News she hopes it will make a difference for her. "I've tried vitamins, me and my husband have tried counseling, I've tried hypnotherapy, but none of those have worked," she said."The lack of desire, the lack of sexual thoughts, no libido -- it's just this one area that's kind of holding us back from being truly happy." Experts generally describe Addyi's effect as "modest." In company studies, women taking the drug that's also called flibanserin reported a slight uptick in sexually satisfying events each month. Their answers to separate questionnaires indicated they experienced a slight increase in desire and a slight decrease in stress. Analysts from Evercore ISI estimate Addyi could generate sales of 00 million annually. That's far below the blockbuster numbers once discussed by experts and the billion that Valeant Pharmaceuticals recently agreed to purchase Sprout. But the buyout has revived interest in a handful of competitors developing alternate treatments. Those products include nasal sprays, injections and antidepressant pills. It could be years before any of them reach patients. That's because the field of women's sexual medicine remains a small one, comprised of tiny companies with limited resources. Leading the field is Cranbury, N.J.-based Palatin Technologies Inc. which is studying an injectable

PERU: LIMA: AUTHORITIES BAN ANTI IMPOTENCE DRUG VIAGRA

02:46
Spanish/Nat The new anti-impotence drug Viagra has been banned by Peru's health authorities. The drug won't be available even with prescription. But Peruvian's have always had traditional forms of medicine to treat impotency - and many people prefer them to the new medicine. Peru's health authorities have banned the virility drug Viagra from the local market. The country's health department says the drug isn't safe to use. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "We want to take this opportunity to alert the whole community that they shouldn't buy or get in any way the Viagra because it has not been authorised in the country and when it's not authorised through a sanitary register, the quality of the medicine can't be guaranteed." SUPER CAPTION: Manuel Izaguirre, Director-general of Peruvian Drug Administration So Peruvians are turning back to more traditional remedies from mountain communities. The brew requires live frogs to be skinned and liquidized - and drunk on the spot. Street vendors serve it to passers-by heading to or from work. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "We use what we call "Viagra Cholo" (Indian Viagra), what is the "maca" (a tubercle) We use it in strong doses, for instance, sixty-year-olds, 55-year-olds, 70-year-olds use it a lot and it stimulates them to have a normal erection. We think this is better (than viagra) because it's all natural, without chemical processes." SUPER CAPTION: Walter Canteno Cotrina, owner of the shop But frogs aren't the only ingredient. The recipe also includes honey, pollen and maca - a root from a local plant. The end product is said to cure not only impotence, but has the power to prevent stress and bronchial infections. Some people swear by the cure. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "I think it's very good, because I was weak from a spider's bite on my leg but little by little I'm getting my energy back." SUPER CAPTION: Froilan Vasquez, extract user The maca, one of the main ingredients of the recipe, is a tuber that grows in Peruvian high lands at 3,800 meters above sea level. The tuber was used by the Incas more than one thousand years ago. If Viagra is approved in the future, there is likely to be competition between traditional Peruvian medicine and the virility drug. Smugglers Carry New Cargo: Cheap Prescription

02:22
Drug smugglers have a new cargo cheap prescription meds from Mexico Just last week, Whitfield County deputies say this E-450 truck was packed with medicine smuggled into the U.S. From birth control to Viagra and antibotics, authorities discovered thousands of dollars in medication. As the costs of prescription and non-prescription drugs continues to increase, so does the demand for more inexpensive options. "What is the cost to me for the black market version of this drug versus what is the cost to me if I buy it through a standard drug store or drug distributor in the United states," asks UTC Economics Professor Dr. Bruce Hutchison. The Physicians for National Health Program says pharmaceutical companies are largely free to set their own prices in the U.S- as opposed to other countries where governments regulate prices more closely. It's a process, Dr. Hutchison says, that drives consumers to more inexpensive means. "It's something that broadly speaking in economics we call a price discrimination. As with anything else we buy in our life, we are looking for the best deal we can get." And that desire for a good deal can encourage consumers to be willing to risk their chances with smuggled drugs. by Mikaya Thurmond
