Let other people have cats and dogs! Owning a pet reptile or amphibian is not as difficult as you might think. However, Jungle Bob says a chameleon is one of the exceptions. In this video, he explains why.
Chameleons are sought-after pets and I really have to interview people long and hard to make sure they know what they're getting into. Because of all the animals in the pet world, chameleons are certainly the hardest to stay alive. By nature, they're extremely skittish.
You see this one doesn't want to be out in the limelight here he doesn't like the bright lights that are on him. He wants to be in a tree and he wants to hide. But that's not possible today, so he'll be okay for a few minutes.
As a keeper, he needs a couple of things to keep him alive. First, they really don't do well in a glass enclosure. Chameleons like airflow so a screen is much better for them. A screened enclosure where the air can flow through is great. They can also grab on to the screen with their nails and climb all around, it which they can't do with glass.
Worse than that, though, in order to keep them happy is they will need a water source to drink from and that is not a bowl. Chameleons like this do not drink from standing water. They drink drips. When it rains they drink as much water as they can. But the only other water they get is basically dew in the morning that will form on the leaves and will start to drip off of it. And we will often see them licking the leaves inside their enclosures to get their moisture.
If we forgot to mist them and forget to put that moisture on, put a bowl of water and go away for three days, they will die of thirst. They do not know enough to go down to a standing body of water and take a drink. Some species yes, Veiled chameleons, no.
So, you really have to be a diligent keeper and keep your animal watered as best as possible. There are a number of devices on the market to do that automatically. But there's nothing like an old plant Mister that you use with your hand to make sure your lizard is drinking every day. As they get to know you they will take it right out of the end of the bottle in order to get their much needed water source.
Chameleons are really an advanced lizard keepers pet. You cannot be a beginner and keep a chameleon happy. They have very fragile legs and arms. They need to be totally camouflaged and have places to hide inside or they become very short-lived. Even in the best of conditions chameleons are not long-lived creatures. Some only a couple of years. Some, five, six, seven years is about as much as you're going to get as chameleon pet. So, a wonderful, "Wow, what is that?" type of animal, but extremely fragile and you have to think twice whether or not you want to buy a chameleon.
Of all the chameleon species veiled chameleons are absolutely the most hearty. The males actually this beautiful crest on top of their hand. And they can actually be taught to eat out of your hand by holding the food item here. They'll shoot it out of your hand. He's a little bit too nervous to do it today, but he'll eat it right out of your hand and that's a wonderful thing to observe in captivity. So there's the veiled chameleon, one of the best chameleons on the market.

I was really sad when he said they have a short life span. I’ve always loved them and thought they were adorable. I have a bearded dragon. I don’t want to buy one because I know that there loyal and I’ll get attached and when they die I won’t handle it. There so damn cute
Keep in mind that this is how to care for one or whatever yet this chameleon is currently brown while happy veiled chameleons should be teal, blue, green, or even yellow. This means that this chameleon is not happy whatsoever
That chameleon was super unhealthy, extremely scared, way too thin, and way too dark. In your amphibian videos gloves latex free should be worn and both male and female veiled chameleons have a crest. I own one myself and over 30 reptile and amphibs, you don't really advocate how to take care of these animals well.
I agree with a lot of the things this guy is saying he is very educated however I would have to disagree with him on the point that a chameleon is an expert lizard keeper only kind of thing. My chameleon was my first lizard I've ever cared for my self and she is well and thriving. I think that if a beginner is committed to the care of this animal it could make a great pet for anyone.
Erm, I seem to be doing just fine as a beginner with a chameleon. He drinks from the droplets off the mister, he eats about three crickets (small) that are dusted with calcium, he started shedding yesterday and is still doing so. I'm about to go into my second week having him.
My firs reptile is a chameleon that may have been a bad idea I've had him for months and he has been ok he has a dropper mister plants and screen cage and some powder to put on his crickets is this good enough
Make sure you have a source of UV light for them, a light tube that emits UVB light that is designed for reptiles (they need replacing after around 6 months use) and sprinkle their food with calcium, this is probably the most imortant part of owning a Chameleon.
(sorry for not replying sooner) Yes there is a reason for this, but only for the UV emitting tube lights or compact flourescent bulbs, the amount of UVA/B they produce reduces over time, after around 6 months they don't emit much for chameleons to absorb it and use calcium (They may last longer but not sure). If you want to save on normal bulbs, get 'rough service' bulbs, the chameleon or reptile specific spot lamps are very expensive and don't last very long.
Fragile is an understatement. These chameleons die way too easy. They get metabolic bone disease and their legs curve or break and then they can't move much. I got an older one about 60 days ago and it is already messed up, legs bent or broken. I really tried to take care of him because I knew they were fragile but damn. I've had other lizards that lasted for years with zero problems. He's not dead yet, force feeding him and hoping for a recovery but I doubt he last another week. Just say no to these chameleons as pets.
vield chameleons are actually pretty easy to keep.... just have the right enclosure, lights and make sure they get properly fed and hydrated. also if you handle them from youth they wont freak like the one in the video that looks to be quite skinny.
It takes a little time, but if you mist around a drinking glass (it has to be glass and it has to be under light for the chameleon to notice it) for a little while a chameleon will learn to drink out of it. You have to change the glass out daily, but not having to mist is better on a chameleon's lungs and keeps bacteria down in their environment.
