Caffeine and Testosterone:
Is coffee bad for you and your health?
Coffee, and the caffeine consumption from it, has become a contested topic in health circles over recent years.
Some people say it’s unhealthy, some people say it’s healthy.
So what does the research say about it, specifically with relation to hormonal health?
Let’s take a look…
I believe hormonal health is the key to longevity and vitality in life. It’s the high leverage way to optimize your health, since it requires viewing your body as a holistic system, not just a specialized area, like the heart, legs, veins, etc… which is the current pitfall of allopathic medicine.
So with that in mind, let’s look at caffeine from the perspective of hormonal health.
First off, caffeine has been linked to a dose dependent rise in cortisol, the body’s chief stress hormone.
So there is definitely a threshold, after which, coffee consumption starts to stimulate a stress response in the body, which is typically responsible for shutting down testosterone production and all manner of bodily focus on higher level function like sexual function… because when your body is in fight or flight mode, obviously the resources are better suited for survival than reproduction.
But what about in the space BEFORE your body has a stress response from drinking too much coffee? Could there be some hormonal health benefits in these dosages?
Yes, there are some very nice benefits, especially with relation to exercise.
For example, this study demonstrated that caffeine before a workout was able to increase anaerobic training capacity and muscular endurance siginificantly in the workout, and this study
Showed a significant increase in muscular strength on bench press and leg press from pre-workout caffeine consumption.
So is this just a fluke? Or is it in fact great as a pre-workout stimulant?
Well, this study
And these two as well
But all this good stuff isn’t all…
Caffeine seems to stimulate an increase in testosterone production as well! Specifically because it increases natural cAMP production, as well as improves thyroid function and coffee is a potent antioxidant.
So with all this in mind…
Use caffeine intelligently as a tool in your tool box for optimizing your hormonal health, specifically if you use it before you hit a hard gym session.
Just don’t go too crazy and drink so much coffee that you have a stress response and big spike in cortisol.

The Coffee is Defenitely not good for the people with High level of Cortisol hormone or Unstable nervous system!
1. You drink It you feel yourself Amazing and Satisfied!
2. After half an hour You feel yourself completely Done and depressed, and your body dictates You to drink MORE!
4. This is the reverse effect of coffee, In my opinion It suppoused to be a small drug
5. Stay healthy and drink More water!
Balanced vid, Thank you. Probably to do with large amount of caffeine, but apparently if a male has a
non-subsiding erection, it becomes a medical issue. One way to resolve it I read, is a caffeine injection.
Awesome .. Again @everyone listen.. I have trained and studied for countless years and am still learning. I drink a cup in the morning I add a product called CocoaVia and the massive L-Dopamine rise is phenomal. If there are jitters I use L - theanine.
Caffeine also increases Estrogen! I've read the studies.
However, consumption of more than one cup each day of caffeinated soda or green tea was associated with a higher estrogen level in Asians, whites, and blacks. The changes in estrogenlevels among the women who took part in the study did not appear toaffect ovulation."
I've read all of your cited studies and you basically cherry-picked from the data as usual. None of these studies involved regular people but athletes. The so-called testosterone increase from caffeine? None! Your testosterone naturally increases during a workout whether or not you ingest caffeine. You also said that you are a big proponent of hormone health? Sleep is the best hormone producer and regulator. Caffeine interferes with sleep dude! Even if you have one cup in the morning, with its half-life, you still have it in your system when you go to bed. Don't be afraid to piss off the caffeine consumers who are fat, sick and tired with jacked-up skin just so that you can warrant and give them permission for their bad addictions.
There are over 13 Benefits stemming from caffeine ingestion; see the below website:
However, caffeine will be bad for anyone who may experience an allergic reaction to it!
The allergic reaction stems from overreactive adrenals do caffeine stimulation!
I'm in my Seventies and have been drinking coffee for decades. It has not affected my adrenal activity nor my sleep pattern!
I drink xyience as a post workout. 0 calories 160mg sodium 15mg potassium total carbs 2g 0g sugar. Niacin 100% vitamin b6 250% b12 80% pantothenic acid 500% 88mg / 8oz mind you serving size 8 fl oz serving per container 2. I think it’s a great quick supplement
It is a good idea to add a little Himalayan pink salt or sea salt to your coffee / as the coffee Brews, this will alkalize your coffee and if you use Himalayan pink salt it also has over 80 trace minerals which is great because coffee can Leach certain minerals from the body. Also make sure to have a little something in your stomach before drinking your morning coffee as coffee on an empty stomach can be damaging. In my opinion if you are using a method to brew your coffee that superheated water flows through plastic I would recommend switching to another machine / method as once plastic is superheated it releases numerous chemicals that are very bad for humans in general and also mess with hormone levels.
Interesting video, but think it could've been a lot more thorough. Coffee is very highly acidic and can lead to tooth decay, gastrointestinal problems, ulcers, and even cancer, which may negate any benefits it has as far as antioxidants. Caffeine also very quickly dehydrates the body which isn't good if you work out a lot. Of course caffeine helps people exercise, because it gives you more energy, but beyond temporarily giving you the ABILITY to work harder it doesn't do much. You might as well eat a ton of sugar and then say sugar is good for working out.
I have definitely been a caffeine addict for the best part of ten years. I go cold turkey give it up, then always end up going back to it. The way I am with caffeine is not healthy. I find it IMPOSSIBLE to just have 1 or 2 coffee's a day. I love pre workout before i go to the gym, and I tried desperately to only have pre workout caffeine once a day without any other consumption of caffeine, and it didn't work. I would get to work in the morning and be like a zombie, and I would sit there thinking about when i would get to have my pre workout. In the end I just went back to drinking coffee all day long. It can't be healthy to be so addicted to something, or put that much of it in your body. How on Earth do people manage to just have 2 a day? It's torture, the entire time all you think about is when you get to have your coffee. I do anyway. As you can tell i'm a total addict, I quit (yet again) 5 days ago and all i'm doing is thinking about coffee now, and trying to find reasons for it to be unhealthy.
but where is the threshold between beneficial levels of caffeine and harmful ones? is it really as simple as noticing the point at which one becomes jittery? as a person becomes acclimated to higher levels of caffeine, the dosage required to become jittery rise, do the levels that constitute a healthy dose rise too?
Some doctors says its bad for your energy in long term and raises cortisol. Some says that 1 cup a day will benefit your health . I'm confused . If raises Cortisol then how raises testosterone as a pre-workout? Explain that.
Woah first of all we need doctors to specialize in one thing because its safer. If I am getting a new heart valve, I want a DR that specializes in it. I know what you mean by looking at the whole picture but you still get better results if you have people who dedicate their lives to 1 part of the body.
I wish you had a book I could buy that had all your amazing info all together in one spot. A book teaching how to change your husband's diet and lifestyle from estrogen dominant to testosterone dominant.
You are attractive.
Also, I've read that caffeine interacts with your fat metabolism. As someone that follows a ketogenic diet, I'm very interested in this idea. What do you know of that? Do you think it [caffeine] interacts with your adipose tissue? And in different ways depending on whether you consume it above or below that stress throshold you mention?
As a medical student graduating in a few weeks I would have to agree. Allopathic medicine is very disjointed in its ability to promote true health. Rather than promoting your own body's potential for optimized health, we focus on diagnosing and managing disease *x* with tool *y* or medicine *z*
I use a French press, and typically drink the whole thing because I like the amount of hot liquid in the morning to help me take a shit.
I'm probably going to use less coffee grounds to reduce how much caffeine is in each cup, knowing that it can raise cortisol.
The one problem that I have with coffee is that I like to use refined sugar in it,
Probably just a good idea to avoid it, since everyone is different. I know I'm addicted to it, and have been working very hard to break that addiction, like most every American. Because one is never enough. Caffeine also works less and less as you regularly consume it, so to receive continued benefits you must use more and more... which leads to addiction. So, I think the wisest recommendation would be to just straight up avoid it.
I quit a 2 pack a day smoking habit 7 weeks ago and I have noticed that coffee feels so much stronger to me since I quit. Now it's time to cut down on coffee. It's all good as long as I am not smoking and am still working out, things should be alright. I hope!
i was drinking coffe right now, but my question is not about coffe my question is why cant i get erection and my sperm is clear and soft and not thick and white like it use to be when i had strong erections, cant it be because of belly fat and body fat,.
I heard that coffee decreases the natural production of HGH and increases the conversion of testosterone to estradiol. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/testosterone-defciency-men-over-ages-25-30-its-high-hertoghe-md (Dr. Thierry Hertoghe is one the best anti-aging doctor, the wrote several books about hormones, he trains doctors around the world to hormone therapies and is the president of the international hormone society and the World society of anti-aging medicine).
I have to disagree with you on this one though. Coffee is addictive . It drains adrenaline. It can cause vein damage due to increase in BP. It causes insulin spike and therefore crash. If you need to drink then drink regular tea made with skim milk. Boil it. It will give just enough amount of caffeine to get you going. My experience is that coffee screw up ones sex drive and performance over a period of time. Tea is a safer option. Green tea no way, since it directly lowers Testosterone!!!!
I totally agree with what you said about doctors. Part of the problem is that because they are licensed they have to follow the protocol given to them by their license granting body. If they say or do anything outside of this invisible but inevitably present control line, then their license and practice is under jeopardy. There are lot of good doctors out there who learned it the hard way. Dr. Deepak Chopra was lucky to find his way through these woods, into success may be because of his late father's karma of selfless service as a physician. Not everyone is lucky though. Big pharmas are watching !!!
cAMP increases PKA and PKA stimulates glycogenolysis in muscular system and liver to produce glucose and we know all about it... however in leydig cells PKA increases testosterone. Yes, caffeine can work, if you can send it directly to your testicles!
Gross aroma.... horribly unbearable taste.... and that's not the main reason I avoid coffee. coffee provides FALSE ENERGY by stealing from your central nervous system.... The caffeine in GREEN TEA has the opposite affect, calming the CSN....ADRENAL FATIGUE is inevitable for coffee drinkers........ There is something amazing out there that will provide massive energy for workouts...... it's known as.... Carbohydrates.
That sounded like one of the most homeopathic things I've ever heard. It "steals" energy from your CNS? What? Like what does that even mean. Every cell produces it's own energy using mitochondria. So you are saying coffee molecules steals ATP from neurones of the CNS. Do you have any evidence of your claim or are you just spewing any old rubbish in the hope that it will somehow add some validity to your self-concocted beliefs
Scotland1908 wait...what? Are you sure you're talking about coffee?? "The greatest party of waking up is coffee in your cup." It sneaks so good that many Fragrance designers are putting that scent in their fragrances.
i actually did see super strength in the gym when taking pre workout caffeine. It made me go from 20 kg to 30 kg easily doing up to 10 reps on my own. whereas before with 30 kg i did 5. So much benefit.
Great vid. But wasn't there a paper citing increase estrogen with increase consumption of coffee? American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. It says that Estrodiol increased in all races except Caucasian women. The study was done on women but do you any that was done specifically for men?
Don't agree with you Christopher! Since I quit coffee my sex drive and performance greatly improved, and I didn't drink a lot. I lost fat and replaced it with muscles. Coffee disturbs enzyme secretion resulting in poor digestion and energy replacement, also - prevents you from experiencing deep sexual emotions! It might excite you into sexual desire but the rest is far from adequate. Coffee is a huge business and I wonder if you have any benefits from it.
What above caffeine and estrogen? My understanding is that the enzyme that metabolizes caffeine also is needed to metabolize caffeine. So too much caffeine can tie up this enzyme causing a slow down your ability to eliminate estrogen. This, causing E levels to rise
