Shane Shapiro, M.D., orthopedic physician at Mayo Clinic in Florida, discusses a regenerative medicine clinical research trial to treat knee arthritis, which is the bone marrow stem cell treatment (BMAC) for knee osteoarthritis.
Mayo Clinic and the Mayo Center for Regenerative Medicine is studying biologically based non-surgical treatments for osteoarthritis. One such treatment is the harvesting of the patient's own stem cells from their bone marrow.
"In our procedure we draw cellular rich bone marrow from both sides of the pelvis. We then filter the resulting product and concentrate the stem cells and their corresponding growth factors. Using an ultrasound to image the knee joint, we are then able to precisely inject the cells into the arthritic knee. We are currently demonstrating that this procedure is safe and can relieve pain. We also hope to be able to slow the progression of the degenerative joint disease and perhaps one day regrow cartilage in the arthritic joint."

Demi Nada Yes, but currently it has only been done and perfected in young knee joint/patients. They are hoping to find a method that uses the same technology but will work for older patients suffering from osteoarthritis, etc. This is according to the video.
I am 56 and stage 4 oa-had injection done at mayo about one year ago. Stem cells and platelets cost about $5k. Previously I had had arthroscopic impingement surgery with micro fracture this left me in pain could not sleep through a night and was on crutches to get around for a year and a half.
I have slept through every night since the injection. I used my crutches at first if I felt any discomfort or inflammation. At about 3 months after injection I thought I was regressing but after being back on crutches for any more the very short walks the pain dissipated and have not been on crutches for months. Still careful but hopeful. I swim, recumbent bike and do the exercises mayo gave me.
Glucosamine proven to be ineffective in multi center studies by AAOS
Stem cell and PRP type technologies been in Europe for few years with excellent results in the right patient population.
Japan minister of health just removed all barriers to stem cell treatments and studies for their country
We are at the tip of the iceberg with these treatments in the US, hopefully insurance will begin paying for this technology and more people will have access to the treatments
Does extracting bone marrow from the iliac crest have an advantage in the stem cell count and viability over fat cell extraction, and would the centrifuged contents be more concentrated when amber as against red in color?
hip/iliac crest and adipose tissue are both effective methods for extracting stem cells
stem cell numbers in our hips/pelvis decrease as we get older, most of us have plenty of fat!
BMAC from hip relatively easy for orthopedist, getting fat cells is essentially liposuction, cosmetic surgeons generally more skilled at that.
I had a PEP procedure done 8 months ago, 2 ACL failures, meniscus "issues", early OA, etc
My knee feels great, no Aleve in 8 months
good technology in the right patient with the right procedure
hope that helps
David, do you know that there is a natural product available that stimulates the release of stem cells from the bone marrow into the bloodstream? It's an economical and non-invasive alternative to the expensive medical procedure and it supports the regeneration of all types of tissue. Scientifically proven, powerful and effective.
lol ya right not with obamacare
its all going to the illegals that have bad diseases
billions a year go to legals
but feel good that the money your worked for is helping them and not you.

i wonder who is doing research in "limb lengthening" by Stem Cells, not only repair for fractions and non unions ? which institution does research on this already? I’m willing to participate as proband
I would be very interested in this trial as I have had Synvisc shots and a torn meniscus repair and still have a great deal of pain when walking and trying to sleep at night is horrendous. How do we sign up for this?
Synvisc is like an oil change in your car, it helps some people
I had a PEP procedure done 8 months ago, (2 ACL tears, few meniscus issues, etc.)
My knee feels great, no Aleve in 8 months
Moving better, no swelling or catching...
I am an orthopedic implant sales rep and understand how people feel, it can be frustrating
Look up Reinvent biologics and Celling Biosciences, they usually will have a link to on orthopedist near you
be careful of Amnio type products heavily advertised
An orthopedic surgeon would be my first stop
hope this helps
Can you use stem cell transplants to stop severe nerve pain? I would be willing to try a research clinic trial to see if it could. I have been to Craig Hospital to do DREZ surgeries twice with no relief from the pain. The first one did work, but it opened up worse pain in the end. I've been fighting this for 8 years and can't take much more of this. I'm growing immune to the oxycontin and will not be given a higher dosage. Please help me, I'm 50 and just can't live 20 or more years with this pain. Every time I wake up the nerves fire so bad I can barely breathe or move.
Take between 30 and 60 minutes (and up to 4 hours) before sex; works for about 4 hoursRecommended dose for most men is 50mgs; after that, dosage may go to as high as 100mg, or as low as 25mg, which may be prescribed for men over 65.Quickly absorbed by the body, less effective after a high-fat meal, and best taken on an empty stomach.
