The traditional Maasai culture is one where the men exclusively consume milk, meat and blood, yet experience no heart disease. However, various studies have shown the following: The Maasai are very physically active. The average American would need to walk an extra 12 miles/19 kilometres each day to match their level of activity. Even though they drink a lot of milk, they actually only eat meat 1 to 5 times a month. They are very slim, with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of around 20. Autopsy studies found that 80% of men over 40 had severe atherosclerosis but no heart attacks as the blood vessels were much larger. Life expectancy is 45 for women and 42 for men, with the people rarely living beyond 60. What can we learn from the Maasai? High levels of milk intake can contribute to heart disease.
