Stir and serve on the rocks with an orange twist. A Negroni is a great option for a cocktail before a really big meal. It comes from the Latin word which means to open. So it's really something to stimulate the appetite. It comes from Italy and it utilizes Campari as one of its major ingredients, which is a bitter liqueur. So I'll get to that in a minute. I'm going to start with one and a half ounces of gin. I like to use a little more gin than in some recipes. Sometimes you see one ounce of gin. I really like that juniper flavor to punch through there. Now we're going to use sweet vermouth, a whole ounce of sweet vermouth. Then one ounce of Campari. A whole ounce of Campari sounds like a lot. If you've ever tasted it it is pretty bitter, but somehow the gin, vermouth and campari, just create something that is so much greater than the sum of its parts. Every time I make one I feel like it shouldn't work as well as it does, but it is a really extraordinary drink. And bitterness in cocktails is something that's really, really great. In food it's often thought of as a negative thing. You don't want something to be too bitter, but in drinks it's very applicable and much more pleasant. So if you're nervous about something being bitter, because you've had a bad experience, say like bitter chocolate or something, try a Negroni and I think you'll be surprised. So we're going to add some ice. We're going to stir this because it's all alcoholic ingredients. No need to shake anything. And I'm going to serve this on the rocks. I think that extra dilution really helps bring out some of those more complex flavors from the Campari and the vermouth. Lots of spice, herbs, botanical's. You know they used to sort of think of alcohol as having medicinal properties, especially in Italy and it really does sort of help settle your stomach. It's actually not a bad drink after your meal, too. It's a nice bookend for a really big dinner. Another really great thing about this drink is that unlike a Manhattan or a Martini, it's not as strong because the campari and the sweet vermouth are lower in alcohol. So it's still stiff, but it doesn't quite pack the same wallop that a martini does. Okay, so let's get our frozen rocks glass from the freezer and if you can. get those ice cube trays that make the perfect cube ice. It's really great for stirred cocktails like this one. Because they're so big they don't melt quite as fast and water down your drink too much. Okay, it's so beautiful. And for a finishing touch we're going to garnish this with a twist of orange, just to further bring out those beautiful aromatic notes. So just squeeze the oils over the top, again with the white part of the orange peel facing you, and then squeezing the oils over the top. And that is how you make a classic Negroni.

in italian black is nero, not negro, so no, they did not mean black, they meant count negroni (of course name negroni is related to black, but what I mean tha tcocktail itself was not meant to be named after black, but after the name)

A Negroni is certainly a strong cocktail (at least, to me it was). Being all alcoholic ingredients, you can really taste the liquor in it. But even if you don't like the Negroni there are other great drinks to make with Campari. It has such an interesting taste that it can go with many other ingredients. Even having it with just orange juice was a big surprise, in terms of taste. But like Jesse said, finding a sample bottle could be worth it. Although, I've never actually seen a 50ml bottle of Campari, so that might be difficult.

It's one of this bar magic drinks... where supposedly unmatching flavours combined result in something amazing. I recommend classic bold london dry gin for this... as it indeed must punch it's way out.

Also, I own a basic vegetable peeler [not the "Y" type but the type Tom is using] and while it does succeed at getting a nice, wide peel off of my citrus fruits, the edges tend to be jaggy and not straight and uniform. What brand or type of vegetable should I invest that alleviates this problem?

Does anyone have a guess as to how big his cocktail stirring glass is? I own a steel 3 piece shaker but I'd love to invest in a classic glass and strainer.

Thanks, Venom. I really like the look of that glass + spoon but I actually recently started using a 12-ounce Pyrex glass and a chopstick for my stirred cocktails and the strainer off of my cobbler shaker to strain! It works just fine and I paid less than $10 for the whole setup.

+marcelo chasi What you imply is partially correct. This specific version is also known as a camparinette, althought that is usually not strained over ice. But it is in fact a negroni. You will find various recipes of the negroni, which call for a splash of carbonated water. If we believe Harry Craddock, this is simply optional.

Yea he messed up, a Negroni is an apéritif. Apéritifs and digestifs are drinks, typically alcoholic, that are normally served before (apéritif) or after (digestif) a meal. An apéritif is an alcoholic beverage usually served before a meal to stimulate the appetite, and is therefore usually dry rather than sweet.{Wikipedia} Open in Italian is aprire, so you can see how apertifs are ment to open you up.

Beautifull video but forget a crucial ingredient for perfect negroni.. The garnish is not a peel but is a slice of orange, Is the little bit of juice that makes it a perfect smooth combination, i alwais squeeze it, trust me and try it!

Jonathan Morse, basic geometry :) Take one big cube of ice. Now imagine that cube cut in half. Same amount of ice, but more surface area (the part where it is cut).

The ice isn't technically larger. If you used the same amount of ice for two drinks but one was a bunch of average ice cubes and the other was one large puck, there would be less surface area in the bigger ice cube.

Aperol can be subbed for Campari for those that want a drink that is less bitter. The only sacrifice is the drink is slightly weaker in alcohol content.
