There are many scales for the beginner guitar player to learn. Our expert is going to show you a scale he calls the pentatonic pattern #1. It's a practical scale he uses every single day. Once you learn it, you no doubt will too.
Next on the list is scales. So scales ‚Äì there's many, many, many books of scales, big encyclopedias of scales, but I'd like to show you the most practical scales that I use every single day. The very first scale I ever learned, I like to call it pentatonic pattern number 1, but it's just a pentatonic scale, or a shape of one. Let's dive in. I'm going to do it here at the 5th fret. So I'm on the 5th fret of the 6th string. And I'm going to use my first finger. Then the next note is not the 2nd fret away from that, not the 3rd fret, but the 4th fret. So on the 6th string I have the 1st and the 4th. Then I move down to the 5th string. And I'm going to do 1, 3 ‚Äì so notice I'm using my third finger. Then the next string, 4th string: 1 and 3. And then 1 ‚Äì 3 again, but on the 3rd string. Then 1-4, but on the 2nd. And then 1-4 on the 1st. So you see, 1-4. That's why I'm saying those numbers, so I have: 1-4; 1-3; 1-3; 1-3; 1-4; 1-4. Now if I want to go backwards, I just start with this note and work my way back. So I go: 4-1; 4-1; 3-1; 3-1; 3-1; 4-1. Now, this is a movable shape, just like bar chords or power chords. I can move this anywhere on the guitar and the shape doesn't change. That's the beauty of the guitar. Let's say we do it at the3rd fret. So I'm going to do it: 1-4; 1-3 ‚ and backwards. How about the 7th fret? And then how about we try Open. That's a little trickier because I have to pretend that my first finger is playing, sort of. Can you see the pattern here? I have in this imaginary spot, 1-4; 1-3; 1-3; all the way down. Of course we're not going to play it like that. We're going to play it a little more natural, right? So it's O-3; O-2; O-2; O-2; O-3; and O-3. That's the same exact pattern. It looks a little different. That's a little thing about the guitar, you always have to compensate for the open aspect. And then I'm just going to work my way backward. 3-O; 3-O; 2-O; 2-O; 2-O; 3-O. There you go. Pentatonic Pattern Number 1.
Play that pattern from nut moving the pattern up one fret at a time up to 12 fret and then back down. Do that 1-5 times before moving on to patterns 2-5. Time consuming but it will be engrained into your subconscious. I guarantee that!
Can i use your pentatonic patterns 1,2 and 3 to any songs? Hmmmm what key is pattern 1( just tell me also the 2 and 3)? Because as what i see from other youtube videos there are major and minor keys. I am a beginner. Great video :)
Learning this isn't really helpful because it's not a "correct" way to learn the pentatonic scale. For example the open position scale is the E minor pentatonic and the one at the 5th fret is A minor but the one at the 2nd fret is the A major pentatonic. If you are going to learn these scales you should go by the key and then learn each pattern for each position. Doing the same pattern on every fret is giving you different keys . This is my opinion of learning scales.
Appreciate Video! Apologies for the intrusion, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you researched - Riddleagan Blossoming Solo Remedy (probably on Google)? It is an awesome exclusive product for mastering guitar scales without the headache. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my mate got great success with it.
choochoochooseyou Pentatonic means (penta=5 tonic=tone) so it's a 5 tone or 5 note scale. Once you get to the 5th note the next note is the same as the first note or the octave which is the same note in a different pitch. So if the first note of the G pentatonic scale is a G then the 6th note will be a G but in a higher pitch (octave). If you hit those two notes you will notice that they sound alike only one is higher in pitch. So the pentatonic scale is really just the first 5 notes of the scale in any position.
Just wanted to make a suggestion that I think would be easier and less confusing for people watching.... Instead of calling the fret that you are starting on as ONE , just use the actual fret number.... So 5 , 8 , instead of 1 , 4 ... ...
Not criticizing I promise, just thought it might be easier for those with less experience... 😁
Excellent Video! Forgive me for chiming in, I would love your thoughts. Have you heard the talk about - Riddleagan Blossoming Solo Remedy (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is an awesome one of a kind product for mastering guitar scales minus the headache. Ive heard some decent things about it and my BF finally got astronomical success with it.
Would you believe I learned the G major scale but I don't know my pentatonics. I know a few shapes from years of figuring it out on my own but I can't use them effectively, nor do I know all of the positions. I'm *so* backwards in my skills.
Thanks so much for showing this scale and pattern. It's hard to sift through all the videos of guitarists wanting to charge people just to show them a few scales. So, thanks for "giving" us the knowledge.
Excellent Video clip! Excuse me for chiming in, I would appreciate your thoughts. Have you thought about - Riddleagan Blossoming Solo Remedy (Sure I saw it on Google)? Great Video clip! Excuse me for chiming in, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you thought about - Riddleagan Blossoming Solo Remedy (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a great one off product for mastering guitar scales minus the hard work. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my best friend Jordan at very last got excellent success with it.
This is one of the best beginner guitar lessons/pentatonic scale lessons I've ever watched. I've played rhythm for years but am trying to learn scales and solos. Most YouTube video's show the pattern and then the guy just rails on his solos and shows off his ability to play FAST. This video is a real lesson...and I'm very excited to learn and follow. If you're a beginner scale/solo player, I highly recommend this and his videos!
I'm doing a similar thing myself at 45. I learned the G major scale after a nearly 10 year gap and I feel I advanced faster in that month when I binged on the lessons then my previous 20 years of learning. I'm backtracking to learn pentatonics.....I'm so backwards, lol

Fretboard Autopsy by Rusty Cooley teaches you the G major scale and how to memorize it in fun and surprisingly easy to learn lessons and patterns. It seemed overwhelming at first but OMFG at the difference it made in finding my way around the fretboard. I'm learning backwards actually because I don't know the pentatonics very well and they're frankly, essential. I hope that might help in finding direction. Keep jamming!
