Abdominal thrusts—also known as the Heimlich maneuver—can be used to expel a foreign object lodged in a choking victim's windpipe.
Never practice the Heimlich maneuver on an infant under a year old or on a person who is not choking. You could cause serious injury.
Step 1: Confirm choking
Confirm the victim is choking. If they are coughing, they are not choking – yet – so encourage them to continue. Signs of choking include the universal hand sign of clutching one's hands to the throat; the inability to cough or speak; labored or noisy breathing; bluish skin, lips, and nails; and loss of consciousness.
Don't slap a coughing person on the back – it doesn't help and can make them start to choke.
Step 2: Call 911
Once you determine the person is choking, act quickly but calmly. First, send someone to call 911.
Step 3: Help the victim stand
Help the victim stand, if they're not already on their feet, and stand behind them with your chest to their back.
Step 4: Wrap your arms around the victim
Wrap your arms around the victim's torso, making a fist with your dominant hand, and center it against the victim's upper abdomen, thumb inward, above the navel and below the rib cage. With your other hand, cover your fist for support.
If you cannot reach your arms around their abdomen or if the victim is pregnant, compress their chest between the breasts at the breastbone. Make firm, backward thrusts.
Step 5: Thrust inward and upward
Quickly thrust inward and slightly upward with your fist, as if you're trying to lift the victim off their feet, causing air to rush out of their lungs.
Don't squeeze the rib cage as you thrust upward. Otherwise you could break a bone.
Step 6: Repeat
Repeat the thrusts until the object dislodges, or the victim loses consciousness.
Step 7: Wait for medical help
If the object does not come free and the victim loses consciousness, proceed with CPR until EMTs arrive.
Step 8: Save yourself
To perform the Heimlich maneuver on yourself, lean your upper abdomen over a hard horizontal surface (such as a railing or the back of a chair) and use it to deliver strong, upward thrusts.
Did You Know?
Besides inventing the famous abdominal maneuver, Dr. Henry Heimlich also invented a chest valve that saved thousands of wounded soldiers in Vietnam.
1:52 everyone please be aware... if someone’s airway is blocked cpr will be completely pointless. You cannot resuscitate someone if there is no way for air to enter the lungs. Also in Alberta Canada the procedure that is taught includes both back blows and J thrusts, switching between them. I would highly recommend researching multiple sources when educating yourself on life saving tools such as this. Nothing beats certified courses tho
I thought you should only do CPR if the object is removed or if the victim doesn't have a pulse; it seems dangerous trying to do rescue breaths when a victim still has something stuck in his/her throat.
I was eating some grapes when my family made me laugh and I started choking, my family thought I was racking and just laughed. I disentangle know what to do so I just punched my stomach really hard and the grape came out.
One day after school, i was walking with a friend. I started choking on a spaceraider crisp ( search it up) i was lucky cuz i could breathe a tiny bit more because of the holes, anyways, i was so scared and noone helped me. My friend was laughing because i always prank him then and now. idk how but i started coughing and the crisp went flying XD
A friend of my dad died in a restaurant recently because no one knew the maneuver in the room. She was 45. Had I been there I could have done it. It's sad to know that her death could have been prevented if at least one person had done something.
An alias I'm SO sorry to hear that. How tragic. These days there's no excuse for not knowing how to do it. You can look up info on the Internet at anytime. Instead of learning something worth while and how to help your fellow man, people are only interested in taking selfies.
They might give rescue breaths because you would be able to see their chest go up and down if the trachea is unobstructed, and if it doesn't then you would know if their trachea is still blocked. But I'm not sure how helpful that would be as you could already see if their breathing as their chest would already be moving up and down.
If I had to watch an advertisement before I could find out on YouTube how to give the Heimlich maneuver her I would be really upset. There is some responsibility to have the top video in this situation
I think everyone should learn how to do this. I choked on a piece of barbecue a couple years ago, probably the scariest moment of my life so far. My windpipe was completely cut off so I couldn't get any air. I remember being so afraid that my three year old was going to watch me die. Thankfully someone a few tables over knew the heimlich and saved my life. There are no words to how grateful I am to him. It took an ambulance 12 minutes to arrive. So, please take a class and learn the heimlich and CPR. I did three days later. You never know when you may need it!
I was in like third grade and in class we were going over for and the heimlech came up and we learned about it but not the self one. When I got home that day I was eating grapes and I started choking and I remembered it but since no one was there I leaned over on the sink and started thrusting my stomach into it until I puked it out. I would be dead if it weren't for that 😅
I was joking one time in a piece of dried chicken in a hotel in Italy, couldn't breath, face turning blue, etc. In that case saved myself by drinking some water which dislodged it. For harder objects the water may not help though but possibly still worth a shot if nothing else works.
I almost choked once when on vacation. Didn't need to Heimlich (we had more unconventional methods and no one there knew how to do it anyway). It was really scary and messed me up for a good couple of years... I ate in the smallest pieces and always chewed like a million times before swallowing.
+rob roy everything related to first aid is subject to change with research.
The reason I said it is because it's statistically better and gives higher chance of survival to only give chest compressions if you are NOT trained in CPR because most people won't know how to do it well!
Where on this world did you learn this technique?.... Because, it is very crucial you must add rescue breaths (either with manual resuscitator OR with mouth) after each set of compressions you perform on someone who is not breathing, no pulse.
I just inquired with our education department, for general public, you do not so mouth to mouth because most people can't get a good seal + it would go into the stomach instead.
But if you are happy to do it, and trained to do it, then mouth to mouth is allowed.
In Australia call 000.
I think it's dangerous and irresponsible to list an emergency phone number that's specific to a certain region when offering advice on the internet which spans the globe. It's the World Wide Web (www.).
Because it's the www they cannot post thousands of emergency numbers for every country ;o)))
Most people know the number of their own country and it should be teached to children as soon
and young as possible.
+Paul Lucas They should probably just say call an ambulance. I'm pretty sure everyone old enough to find this video knows what the emergency service number is for their country. Responsible travelers should really look it up for any foreign country they'll be visiting too.
+xRedskyy actually my ex husbands brothers little boy choked on a peanut and ended up with a collapsed lung,he was ok after they sorted him out, dont know about a grape,i think that would more likely get stuck in the windpipe, there has been three cases of young children dying choking on a grape in the last few weeks
I inhaled a tiny piece of salad at a dinner party and thank heavens one guy there knew the heimlich because I was just about to pass out from not being able to breathe. He did it about 5 times and the blockage flew out and I took a giant breath and was shaking all over.At the time I didn't know you can do the heimlich on yourself. He saved my life by using it
Everyone should know how to do this! My mom saved my life earlier this year...got to that point where I couldn't breathe, I was passing out. She saved my life. Also have done the self chair maneuver to myself a couple times when stuff wasn't going up or down. I know, I really need to learn how to eat...
I chocked once and my sister didn't know what to do. She just stood there looking at me. And you're not that calm when you're chocking, you turn red, start freaking out, you do put your hands at your throat, you would even start jumping up and down or start breaking plates. Luckily for me, after what felt like a minute, what was stuck in my throat cleared and my lungs got air. I'm going to show her this video.
